Alonso claims pole

Somehow the Silverstone qualifying was a copy of the one last week in France. Fernando Alonso again was the fastest man on track while Raikkonen put in a second time. Just like last week he will also have to move 10 places down on the grid because of an engine change. Second on the grid will therefore be Jenson Button with Montoya on third.

Championship leader Alonso was again vastly quicker than his teammate Fisichella, now with a margin of more than one second between them.

Less than 3 hundredths of a second slower than Alonso was Raikkonen, already with the newest specification Mercedes' engine. He was driving the previous one but as the oil pump of that engine failed him in the second free practice session earlier this morning.

Button will now start from second position on the grid as the faster from the B.A.R drivers. Takuma Sato did not get further than an 8th position (so 7th in the grid).

For once Barrichello was faster than his teammate Schumacher with a 6th time. Schumacher has lost 4 tenths to his teammate in the second sector, putting him 10th just in front of Jacques Villeneuve.

The Canadian Sauber driver is 11th being more than a second faster than his teammate which might point to a different strategy.

Further down the grid, Coulthard was again quicker than Klien.

In 20th place with no time is Monteiro who did not drive in qualifying for an unknown reason so far.
