Could someone explain "the whole electrical system will be converted from a 400 to 800 volt system" stuff ? And how it is a new tech ?

AMuS most of the times have some insight because Michael Schmidt manages to get “juicy” stuff from engineers. But to have enough info to copy something in F1 is an entirely different story from having info such as that the electrical system will be converted from 400 to 800 volts. We’re talking about hugely complex technology.

I think from a PR perspective, I’d rather bring it in secret and hope it works.

Cyril’s comments about their horsepower and the snide comments about their performance are classic examples of that.

400V is archaic by modern standards and compared to the maximum limit of 1000V.
Formula E run 600V.

In F1, we’re now close to 1,000 volts with the ERS battery. Modern electric road cars usually operate systems of up to 400 volts; however, the voltage will increase in the future and be closer to the voltage used in Formula One today.

Well, it ran on 400V and now it will be 800V. It's new because they made it now and weren't using it before. :)

A larger voltage inherently requires less conductors, so probably they're be saving some weight. What other advantages a 800V system would have I can't say.

For the same power higher voltage means lower current. Resistance losses increase with the square of current so increasing the voltage leads to higher ERS efficiency.

Very interesting article. If mercs were supposedly at 1000 V already, I dont believe Ferrari would so behind so as to be at just 400 V. Which means either Daimler was bullshitting or AmuS is???

not so

consider using a lower voltage for the same power as the original
eg halving the voltage means doubling the original current
this will require a quarter of the original armature resistance
so the resistance losses in the armature will be unchanged
