Red Bull RB18

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

RedBull have gone to extremes to push the front tyre wake outwards. The double blade bargeboard outer strake, the extreme undercut with the sidepod maximum width a long way back. The bottom lip of the sidepod intake helping create a long channel.

It's going to be interesting to see if this car is difficult for others to follow - It's the most extreme attempt to flout the "no throwing the wake wide" rules so far.
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

Is it me or is this actually pretty similar to the Ferrari concept? Kyle.engineers commented that Ferrari are using the sidepod inlet as a wing, which clearly redbull have taken to the extreme. Then front undercut, then swoops out wide and flat along the side.

Redbull obviously going for downwash off the top of the sidepod to the rear while Ferrari are doing something different there, but everything from the side surface of the sidepod down seems similar - top surface very different.

Looks like they are running 2 of their 4 floor strakes in the out board, longer legality volume to act as bargeboards

Doesn't the car look unfinished?
interesting 'kevlar' looking undercut sidpod there , you'd think it would be carbon like the rest of the bodywork? no expert here..
some heat related issues I believe, perhaps some Pyrosic coating (?) ..... the inside must be so crowded & tight packaging that it generated more heat and wont let painting on the outer skin

Interesting strakes. The outward angle is much less pronounced than on the other cars.
So it seems they try to get a very clean and energetic flow into the undercut - also helped by the pull-rod front suspension - and divert it outside somewhat later.

Front suspension very interesting. Front upper wishbone mounted to the top of the tub, rear one mounted very much lower. Steering arm mounted at the same level as the lower wishbone arms.

This seems to have almost every single trick the other car have all at once and then some.

The upper wishbone is insane! The rear leg is not only at an extreme angle but also very thin.

AOA wise they seem to run a lot less DF by the front wing itself compared to Merc which has a quite similar middle loaded philosophy.
This might mean that they are very comfortable with the floor DF they are creating.

on another sidenote...
This concept seems to be a lot dependand on a constant airflow and direction to manage the air which goes ointo the sidepods for cooling.
It will be interesting to see if the car will struggle with overheating on very windy days (backwind) or following behind cars.

The amount of open floor real estate under the sidepod intakes are just insane!

Incredible that Redbull have pulled this off with a budget cap and while developing the 2021 car
