Alpine A522

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

So, according to the team bringing the inlet forwards and making it (possibly to fit w. regulations) square with the flaring bit along the side of the bounding box reduces drag. And it is said to improves 'rake control'; is that outwash, or the car keeping the floor more even during the lap?

It does look like an added shroud rather than something that needs a crash test.
Good in terms of saving money.

Alpine top speed : 337kph for Alonso, 342kph for Ocon.
Very promising for the race really.

I can't find really good pictures of this but I think where the floor meets the sidepod, just in front of the B(I drew a yellow line on the new profile and copied it to the old on fabrega picturee) ...they've change the profile with the front sidpod change and it doesn't have as deep a pocket as it did before(the arc is bigger on the OLD profile). See if you can confirm this ...

Pat Fry does like his low drag concepts doesnt he? He set the ball rolling for Mclaren in 2019 who carried it through to 2021. Alpine fans should look forward to this one, Canada, Austria and Monza

Yes, but I think Renault was already going into that concept before. In 2019/2020 Renault upgraded their engine but the RS19/20 was really low drag. Their best result in 2019 was Monza (4th and 5th). In 2020 they were also very fast on S1 and S3 at Spa which was also their best result "on a regular race" (4th and 5th too).

Agreed. I think they went with a low downforce concept for one or both of the Silverstone races in 2020 too.
It’s a great weapon to have of you can make it work.
I guess Renault and Pat Fry go hand in hand in that respect

Yes, and in Sakhir bis they were good as well.
I think seeing how the RB18 performs make them think it can be effective.
Given the fact that the DRS is less powerful this year it's good for defending. On the overtaking side, if you can follow on race pace you will be able to overtake on a track like Baku with this top speed advantage even at 0.7 sec behind.
If the qualy pace can be good tomorrow they can be something big in the race.

I’m impressed by that rear wing and how shallow it is - looks the shallowest of the bunch tbh. If they can still have the downforce they need to be thereabouts in the first two sectors then it’ll say something about the chassis.

As I thought, that thing is rapid in the final sector and I’m still impressed that they can run that wing and be competitive (excluding Ferrari and Red Bull) over the full lap. Seems like a good upgrade and hope to see Fred get some luck for a change.
