I think if Alonso was there, they'd be 3ird. Ocon is hot at some tracks and cold at others. Gasly has been getting used to the car and we still haven't seen consistency from him nor do we know if he can be. Dispite the driver BS, they've been 4th fastest most of the year. Only being surpassed by McLaren(in speed) of late. Don't forget McLaren has been almost dead last for most of the year. They threw away a ton of points in Australia after the Haas retirement with a couple of laps to go.To add insult to injury, McLaren ended up with 14 points, when they were running out of the points before that.
3rd? Laughable.
Think about it, who's next to stroll if Alo isn't there? AMR would probably have 110 points and be happy with that.
Where Aston are is irrelevant because there's still 4 faster teams currently if we exclude Aston (Mclaren, Mercedes, FErrari, RB). Thats Alpine's reality. Not 3rd..

You're making that assumption based on that last 3 races. The fact is there were 12 races since the season began. In the first 9 races Alpine was a hell of alot faster than McLAren and they don't have the points to show for it. So if you remove Aston and McLaren from the mix, Ferari have had issues in the earlier part of the season. Alpine should have been able to compete with them.

Remove Max from RBR and put in Ocon. How fast does that car look ?

Sorry but Alpine is not the 3rd best car in anyone’s hands save for Monaco, which nullified PU and drag. Not with 30hp less, and not with the aero deficit.

They should have the points to be in the mix for 3ird for the mid season constructors standings. Obviously the 2nd half is gonna be a challenge because of other teams upgrades. They are not currently the 3ird fastest car.

Points is not going to console them. They want to have the fastest car.

No more expectations there. It's a wait for Mattia, if their lucky, and the team he builds. Maybe that explains Fry's leaving. Maybe he knew Mattia was coming and he's already got some people in mind for those positions. Maybe he didn't get alomg with him when they were both at Ferrari?

I hope binotto is coming. And I hope he is given significant power/control, but wary of micromanagement by the board given recent failures looming.

Is there any decent source with more concrete info that he's coming to alpine?

I would like to see both Binotto and Sainz there, that would give us a true measure of the team's and car's capabilities. However, I believe both of them are going to Audi Sauber and Alpine speculation is used simply for negotiations...
And they call it a stall. A STALL!

What's the betting odds on a Honda buyout of this team? Engine IP and all.

I don't think Alpine is for sale. Pretty sure Porche and Audi already kicked those tires.

Last year, the Renault Group published a press release indicating they are open to new investment into Alpine F1 Team. That they wanted to use that money to spread Alpine cars around the world. They've gotten some investment. If they want more or not, I don't know.

Absolutely zero. Honda is not buying anyone else's PU IP. It's not how they operate.

I wonder if there could possibly be a Nissan tie in?
If Honda see F1 as a good option, as do more German makers, and Renault/Nissan already have a tie up?
When arguing with a fool, be sure the other person is not doing the same thing.

https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/ ... automaker.

From one month ago...

Renault said Alpine Racing, the French entity that makes the team's power units in Viry-Châtillon, will remain entirely owned by the automaker.

Renault CEO Luca de Meo is seeking to raise Alpine's profile in his push to expand the sports car business and move toward electrification, and the F1 efforts are a key plank of his strategy. Investors are increasingly attracted to F1, whose popularity boomed in recent years.

I could see a "cheap" Nissan sale, but Honda has plenty of $ to buy any team they would want (including the IP, even if none of it is used...)

Not sure why we're even talking about this. It doesn't make sense. Why would Honda spend 1 billion € on Alpine to then throw away Chatillion-Viry and build their power units in Japan? They could just apply for a new team for just €500 million? Ain't no "cheap" in F1.
