From reading the various articles reporting on the timeline of the decision it seems Lawson just isn't able for the pressure of being benchmarked against Verstappen and broke down almost immediately during testing, no recovery likely.

He was also fairly loose with his comments on a number of podcasts over the winter break so that may not have helped.

That mistake hasn’t really plagued him much as you think, Mercedes would’ve been struggling in these regs even if they did have Verstappen, and this whole “design the car for Verstappen” is not how Mercedes operates because they give a car that works well for both drivers.

My goodness, this fairytale dream about Verstappen to Mercedes is even more hard to believe, when you consider that Max has a GT3 deal with Aston Martin so if he ever decides to quit F1, he can go straight into WEC. Which is why Aston makes the most logical sense for Max regardless of “Engine advantage”.

Verstappen IS the failure of the Merc driving program. Toto missed the generational talent after Lewis and it has cost him dearly in terms of both race wins and championships. He’s not making that mistake twice. We saw what happened last time Merc signed a generational driver in their prime, the year was 2013. George is very good, but he’s not Verstappen. Toto would do the deal because he’s not a fool, and Max would do the deal if it made sense from a performance standpoint. But I get it, you don’t want it to happen.

How AMR progresses through this season will give some indication if they are headed in the right direction.

Yes, I think Max will keep an eye on this. Last two years have been atrocious development for them. Wind tunnel has just been completed a few weeks ago and Newey has been on board for a month so the moment the first effective upgrades start pumping out of the factory might signal a change of trend.

It's not so many tenths that separate the grid, it's very tight. They're like p12-p13 but a good package will make you jump straight to p8-p9 and the situation changes. Or that doesn't happen in 2025 and it might signal they need more years instead. We will see.

Maybe this suggest that the original direction they planned to take is a failure and they needed to re-evaluate.

In other news the white bull is back, not confirmed by team but outlets are running with it and red bull continue to hint towards it (Max's special helmet, changed their logo to red/white on twitter etc) . Red bull will race with a special white livery as a thank you to honda for the Japanese GP, as rumoured
