We have seen cars have typically less rear wing than last year. My question is, would it be possible and/or allowed to race without a rear wing at all? I am thinking of course about Monza and even more Las Vegas.
Last year, McLaren walked away with the front row, not because of top speed, but because of downforce. Out of the top four teams, they had the poorest S1, the best S2 (where all the 90 degree turns are) and on-par S3. There is a lot of focus placed by the pundits and commentary teams about top speed and the exit from parabolica before the long straight, but Mclaren realized last year itself, that the key was Sector 2. And they had more than 2 tenth advantage there - that was enough to give them pole by more than 1 tenth margin.
In a track with many 320+kph bursts, it was one ~100kph corner (T4-5) and two ~200kph corners (T6 and T7) which gave pole - that's as big an oxymoron as it gets in F1.
