Mercedes W17

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

So what does that area do? Do the openings capture air moving from front to back, top to bottom, or do they actually take air hitting the tire and does it move back up through the floor? Or none of the above lol.

This has some good FW comparison photos if someone wants to format/embed correctly.

Wish the site did it automatically.

As far as I understand it, it's a highly sensitive area that has a big effect on the way tyre squirt is managed, and the flow of air into the diffuser. It also generates local load itself. There is also freedom to introduce slots, vanes, flicks in the area, to enhance the control you have over the tyre squirt (potentially at the cost of local load generation).

The brake duct winglet, diffuser vortex generators, and floor rear corner regions are amazing details on this car

Wonder if those are modular tips on the floor daggers.

A Red Bull front wing philosophy I think... Elminate excessive vorticity so that the floor gets a more uniform stream.

Or have more of the span closer to the ground to increase overall front wing ground effect downforce and also give a more uniform spanwise spread of load. It would suggest they can balance this increased downforce at the rear with their various devices and diffuser cut-outs, etc..
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.
