work at Maranello to introduce the first evolution of the power unit has been completed. As previously reported, the first package is expected to be worth in the region of around 4/5 horsepower from the internal combustion engine, to which a further slight benefit from the evolution of the Shell fuel — expected from the Austrian Grand Prix onwards — could be added. This should guarantee a modest gain in the order of 2/3 hp, which equates to 1 tenth of a second per lap on a short layout like Spielberg.
The objective would not so much be to immediately overturn the performance hierarchy, but rather to recover part of the gap highlighted by the FIA measurements that allowed Ferrari to obtain two additional development tokens during 2026. The Federation has indeed determined that the Maranello engine falls into the band of well over 4% relative to the benchmark identified in the ICE performance index, thereby allowing two additional homologations in 2026 and a further two in 2027.
ADUO: the FIA has given the green light for the introduction of the updated engines, although official public confirmation has not yet arrived. Ferrari will update (7 HP), while sources close to Audi deny the engine update in Austria.
