Car is damaged unfortunately....

11:41 This could be the end of the day's work for Virgin

11:39 The Brazilian is uninjured and out of the car but the Virgin machine is damaged

11:37 The third red flag of the day has been caused by di Grassi, who has just crashed against the tyre barriers, apparently

BBC wrote:1137: More testing woe for new F1 team Virgin. Lucas di Grassi crashes at turn nine, which is normally taken at 150mph. The team have had all sorts of problems so far this off-season with Timo Glock suffering a front-wing failure in the first test in Jerez while they were restricted to only 144 laps of running at the second four-day test at Jerez because of hydraulic issues.

BBC pit-lane reporter Lee McKenzie on Twitter: "At Virgin garage now, car coming back in. Lot of damage to rear. Di Grassi looks very mad. Virgin won't be out again today after the crash."

It looks like Red Bull and Webber are first to put down a flying lap or two. It doesn't look like Ferarri and McLaren want to play yet. I don't know about you guys, but I've got some serious anticipation going on waiting to see what those two can do in reply.

sarahholtf1 A Mercedes silver and turquoise van has shipped Rosberg back to the garage while the car is predictably lifted onto the recovery truck
Red flag by Rosberg. Running out of fuel?

Green expected soon.

15:22 The session has restarted.

I think they are trying to learn the effects of removing each aerodynamic component. Tomorrow, the bottom plate will drop.

Do we know whether Webber used fresh tires for his fast laps today?

If Rosberg ran out of fuel, his last laps could have been compared to Webber's flying laps - unless his tires were all messed up.

So I decided to start sampling the live data from williams site (from after lunch), this is a small chart I made of the stints:

Much more info can be extracted, anyway, here is the raw data for any one interested. It is sampled at 60s intervals. The data is probably not perfect, there are surely some errors in there, but take it for what it is. Just note that since it is just sampled data from a table, there are loads of duplicate timings to filter out. Have fun:

Are you extracting this data manually?

If so, I'll bang a script together to scrape the data from the website automatically.

Thanks, this is very interesting. It's a shame Kimi is no longer competing. I would have liked to have seen if his laps were as metronomic as people claim.

You might be able to imply from the graph that the McLaren and the RB are comparable on a very heavy fuel load. Also interesting to see Rosberg getting slower on his stint. I assume this is the tyres going away from him.

I am also wondering whether the tyre wear pattern can be extracted from Webber and Buttons long stints. If so, then it looks like the tyres may be going off in about 15-20 laps for a heavy fuel load.

Nope, some seriously ugly javascripting is pulling the data from the site, but thanks for the offer!

does anyone have any pictures of the Virgin after the accident at turn 9?

What's worrying is that it's taken at 150mph normally, that's rather fast to be having an accident.
