Also, a backmarker two laps down in Monaco has all the reasons to race, specially this year. For Lutus, Virgin and Hispania, any point they pick is likely to mean 10th position and a lot of money at the end of the year. And if, as it is most likely, none picks a point, then the 10th position will go to whoever get a 11th position. And if not a 12th and so on.
In Monaco cars crash, so 2 laps down you are easily 20th, or 18th, or even 16th... what if later it starts to rain and more cars crash? This could be the race deciding the team's classification at the end of the year, and just staying in the race has a lot of value. If you are a Lotus 2 laps down, you want to run like hell to stay ahead of that Virgin 2 and a half laps down!

I think the slow guys should race their race. If the fast guys want to pass them then tye had better hope for some co-operation. If not, I don't mind. It is part of the game.

I race motorcycles..and am not very fast..lol...so when the extremely fast guys ceom to lap me I don't do anything different. If they have the pace to catchn up 2 miles on me in 15 minutes then they can pass me at their own expense - I won't be moving or slowing for them.

I know F1 is not the same...but the principle is. fast guys need to learn to pass the slow guys and the slow guys need to carry on and not put themselves off the track to get out of the way.

Watching some stats. More or less 14 cars finish the race at monaco.

More specifically in 2004 just 9 cars ended the race. So that would mean that there's a (although light) chance that just by finishing you could score points.

So what? They have to get off line to make a pass whoever it is they are going to overtake.

They have it too easy in a lot of respects...

Not the most exciting question of the weekend, I know, but if anyone was wondering if the new teams are catching up, it appears that they certainly are. This is a comparison of their Q1 times to the best Q1 time.

(The 107% is on there for reference, but applying the rule the way it is written to the past few years' quali format is a little...wonky.)



It looks to me like they're steadily improving but struggling at some tracks more than others, maybe for lack of data or lack of downforce.

It is easier to upgrade a bathtub on wheels than a fully developed vehicle. Plus, the new teams have finally come to grips with their cars. At the beginning they didn't have any data whatsoever, but now this is gradually changing, which allows them to improve the setups etc.

what a coincidence ...the new teams learning the ropes exactly with the same speed as the established teams develop their almost perfect cars...

The new teams are at a completely different development stage than the frontrunners.
It is relatively easy to find huge gains at the very beginning, as the flaws in a given car's design are pretty obvious. However, the more perfect the car gets, the harder it is to make it even better. That pretty much explains it, at least for me ;]

so ,please explain just why virgin had difficulty in the last three races to get their NEW car with bigger fuel tank ,resolved fuel pickup(20l less qualy fuel) and newly developped aero up to the speed the original car had?If it where so easy for them to find speed ..I bet this would have been the golden opportunity to leapfrog
the whole new car bunch knowing the wrongs with the firsst iteration.But it just did not happen.because it is not the little appendages we see that bring the huge gains needed .also Lotus was in no ways in aposition to make huge gains ...as we see they
struggle to get closer with what they have ,as the limeit is near.
to me a lot is having the concept right .If you have flawed the basics you can tune forever it will not grow wings overnite or in day and nightshifts...
