Oil Companies in F1

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Oil Companies in F1

Post

Does anybody know which company is supplying fuel and oil to each Team?

It was said by Mercedes-Benz that all Mercedes teams are using Exxon-Mobil products. It looks like Petronas is only supplying MONEY to them!

Shell is obviously supplying Ferrari, Sauber and ToroRosso.

Total with Renault and RedBull.

How about the others? Petrobras? BP-Castrol?

Its strange. I'd like to see what companies Shell owns because i have seen Penske oil commercials advertising that it is used in Ferrari road cars (i think it was Penske oil). Oil, i'd say Shell, Mobil 1, and Total, but i bet you would find other manufacturers of grease and other lubricants if you were able to dig further.

PENSKE Oil is related to suspension oils used in shock absorbers. Not engine oils.

Then maybe it was Penzoil. either way, i was suprised because Ferrari is sponsored by Shell. If i see the commercial again ill make note of it.

I think you need to differentiate between commercial and technical sponsorship; the technical sponsors, such as Shell with Ferrari, provide the fuel and lubricans (and other stuff like hydraulic fluids, brake fluids, etc). Commercial sponsors simply pay for adverticsing space on the vehicle;

I'll confine this response to the technical sponsors;
McLaren Mercededs - ExxonMobil; fuel & lubes
Mercedes Brawn - Petronas
Williams - I couldn't find anything - curious, I wonder if Cosworth specifies the fuel and lubes, but I couldn't find anything on their website.
Renault - Total
Red Bull - Total
Toro Rosso - Shell (but probably on a pay for fuel, lubes and tech support basis as there is not sponsorship on the car
Sauber - ditto Toro Rosso
that's all I could find for the moment...

The fuel and engine lubricant comes with the engine package, so all teams running a Mercedes engine for instance use ExxonMobil fuel and engine oil.

If I were Petronas paying $30 mil p.a. I would not tolerate this. Actually I think you are wrong in the case of Mercedes Petronas GP.

Not sure about Petrobas/Mercedes

But the general practice is not that uncommon in racing.

as an example in 1990/1991 Repsol had sponsoring of the Toyotas in the WRC, but
at the time Duckhams/Silicone oils where used. - no big deal
Repsol even supplied empty plastic bottles/canister so we could fill the oil into it.

Klüber makes some very specific lubricates/greases which are used by a varity of F1 and other racing teams.
Especially high temperature grease for wheel bearings, CV joint and rocker/needle bearings.

No, I'm not wrong, and the practice is quite common in racing. Petronas only pays for adspace.

Andy Cowell at Mercedes-Benz HPE have indeed confirmed that all the Mercedes powered teams use engines to the same specification, including fuels and oils developed by ExxonMobil in Paulsboro, New Jersey in collaboration with MBHPE.

I do hope I am not off topic here, kindly bear with me,..
I was wondering if you have any information on how the motor oil
of an F1 car look after a race, it would be very informative to know
on how its looks, its color and condition, after such high RPMs and extreme
usage, can anyone share a link to this information, kind regards to all...

WB, it all depends on what type of a sponsor you are... if you are a technical partner (e.g. Shell/Ferrari) you can be sure that all the fluids will be supplied by the technical partner. However, this does require a degree of openness between the team and the sponsor. When I worked with Shell they had the Ferrari engines in the lab well ahead of the next season developing fuels and lubes for the various track types.
If you simply purchase ad space you put your sticker on the car and it's up to the team to decide what goes into the fuel tank. The only exception to this would be if the engine supply deal required the use of specific fluids/lubes.

It is also feasible that other fluids (hydraulic, coolant, greases, etc) might be part of a separate technology sponsorship/partnership.

Not a very honest way to promote products is it but then we are in a criminal period of economics after all.
