Yes and the paint came when Mercedes buyed themselves in mclaren, now they dont own these shares anymore thus the chrome doesnt make sense enymore. The force india isnt grey either is it? The Sauber isnt red either because it has an Ferrari engine in it.

Its not quite Bruce Mclaren Orange. To quote Mclaren 'The cars' book I received for Christmas, it is Papaya orange that over time became known as Mclaren Orange.
It was first seen on the 1967 Can-am M6A three years after his first car.

On the current colour debate Im surprised it causes so much debate every year. Mclaren have created their own brand and livery that in the main doesnt have to change for any of their smaller sponsors. Paint it black and red and many of the casual viewers wouldnt think it wasnt a mclaren or worse still may think its a Virgin!

I hope and think it will stay in the great current scheme.

Having said that, McLaren orange isn't as iconic and symbolic of McLaren as say, Ferrari red is of Ferrari. When we see a 90%-red car on the grid we think Ferrari. If we see orange, it might not be McLaren that comes to mind. Even the dark-grey-silver is more iconic of Merc.

And even then , Ferrari red came in different shades of red through the years . Marlboro , Vodafone et al, all had an influence on the shade

The original red must be the earliest pre-war, probably Alfa.
Ferrari sold its soul and its colours to the 'dream' years ago.

For many fans, McLaren's iconic colours would probably be red and white from the Marlboro days:

As iconic as those colours may have been (and I will remember them fondly) they were still FAR FROM unique to McLaren and therefore will always be Marlboro's iconic colours, rather than McLaren's ... when you think of that, you are only thinking of a sponsor who's allegiance owed more to commercial considerations than any "iconic" status. Say what you like about Ferrari, their shade may change but their overall livery has been reasonably consistent (with the possible exception of 1993).

Hell, during the FISA-FOCA war in the 80s, Marlboro backed both sides.

In the FOCA camp : McLaren
In the FISA camp : Alfa Romeo

Here are a number of shots of the Alfa Romeo cars from the period :

Do you still see those colours and think of McLaren, or do you get an urge for a smoke?

Gridwalker, linking imges to other sites usually causes problems.

You should snag the pics you want and rehost them on imageshack.us or imgur.com or something, then they will be there with some degree of permanence.

I am pretty sure you didn't want to show corvettes :)

thats such a poor logic, mecesed had a very large stake in the mclaren team before they bought put brawn, so thats why they went silver unlike the other teams mentioned and to your other post, they shouldnt need to chnage just because of merc, the colours are totally different. I say keep the chrome, it looks amzing and really stands out, espeically at singapore and abu dhabi.

It's interesting to pay http://mclarengt.com/ a visit. The GT3 version of the MP4-12C rendered in the previously mentioned orange color. Furthermore I noticed James Allen posted a comment saying he'd look into a potential livery change.

The first thing that comes to mind when I see that red and white livery is McLaren, yes.

I do not, nor have I ever, smoked. Never had the urge to, either... :D

It is still a moot point really :

If the "bar code" is too close to a Marlboro logo for the FIA and EU legislators, then the striped livery will never be allowed.
