Thanks for that, man. Never knew... =D>

Is it correct to say Infiniti is much less well-known compared to Lexus and Acura? Anyway, I don't know if it's just me, but to put Infiniti (or even Lexus, for that matter) behind the name of an F1 team is kinda weird.

Acura's fine, though.

Great. So there's still a chance to squeeze a Dacia badge somewhere in there. Infiniti is the second manufacturer to enter F1 as an official logo supplier.

PS: Mark Webyear to the rescue! To Infiniti and beyond.

Off topic, I know, but :

Really? I know I am sourcing Wikipedia here (so it is hardly authoritative) but here is a surprisingly detailed explanation of how the Lexus name was derived :
Wikipedia wrote:In 1986, Toyota’s longtime advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi formed a specialized unit, Team One, to handle marketing for the new premium brand. Image consulting firm Lippincott & Margulies was hired to develop a list of 219 prospective names; Vectre, Verone, Chaparel, Calibre and Alexis were chosen as top candidates. While Alexis quickly became the front runner, concerns were raised that the name applied to people more than cars (being associated with the Alexis Carrington character on the popular 1980s primetime drama Dynasty), and as a result the first letter was removed and the "i" replaced with a "u" to morph the name to Lexus. The marque's etymology has also been attributed to the combination of the words "luxury" and "elegance," and another theory claims it is an acronym for "luxury exports to the U.S." According to Team One interviews, the name has no specific meaning and simply denotes a luxurious and technological image
This fits with the marketing report that I read on the topic 20 years ago, but it wouldn't surprise me if the acronym story really was true and the rest of the story was made up by ad execs who wanted to justify their exorbitant consulting fees ;)

The head line for this thread is actually wrong. The engines are not going to be rebranded with Infiniti. They will remain Renault engines. Infiniti will be a sponsor with four badges on the car according to Red Bull.

Yup, but most of the world's press channels were crying foul already. The situation has only been rectified recently

The name won't change probably due to the TV income issue. Change the name, loose the tv income.

I thought that the TV income was only based around the Chassis and Team names? Teams have switched engines many times without paying a penalty, so I don't see how renaming an engine could invoke the same clause ... BMW Sauber had to retain their BMW branding (despite changing management and switching to Ferrari) because BMW was part of the full team name, but sauber didn't pay a penalty for tacking "Ferrari" onto the end to denote their engine supplier.

The word "renault" isn't part of the Red Bull Racing team name, but is tacked on as the engine supplier : I am fairly sure that they wouldn't have to pay a penalty for changing the name of a part supplier ...

horse wrote:Yeah, think you might be right about that. This press release seems to back up that Genii capital don't own Renault engines.

I reiterate the assertion, then, that Red Bull could well become the sole "works" Renault engine team. Renault Sport F1 doesn't need to supply engines to Lotus Renault for the sake of it...
Yup your both correct. My assumption got the better of me
Renault Sport will have done a deal with Genii capita for use of engines for a certain period of time. Also, I think Renault sold to Genii on the basis of them being able to buy back at some stage if they felt the need to do so.

This rebranding excercise for Red Bull and infinti is one that is pretty crass IMO. Slap the badges on and people will know no different? Says alot about the people that are in the market for an Infinity no?
More could have been done.

Par for the course in F1, a lot of teams & engine suppliers now run under a different badge or foreign flag.

Including Austrian Red Bull of Milton Keynes and French Renault of Enstone.

French Renault are based in Viry-Chatillion AFAIK. Enstone isn't owned by Renault any more. They only have the badge due to Behar's follies. If he had not gone on to make as many enemies in F1 as possible the Enstone team would have probably switched from Renault to Lotus. ATM GenII have the majority and keep the Renault badge. Any attempt to switch to Lotus would most likely be vetoed by Tony Fernandes until he gets a settlement of the brand dispute.

I don't get your point. First and foremost, Infiniti is part of the same corporation to which Renault belong so they can name the motors anything they like from amongst their brands. And secondly, it's not as if we are going to find one of these F1 engines in a road going Renault model (or for that matter, an Ilmor one in a similar Merc) so what difference does it make to the consumer? This level of crassness with regards to the branding of F1 cars has been de riguer for a long time now amongst all teams...

Bottom line is the Enstone team is still called Renault and raced under French flag for years (until now).
