Tyre Question

Post

Is it legal for teams to mix the tyres used at any one time? That is, A team experiencing excessive wear on the rear tyres may elect to use the hard compound for the rear tyres and softs at the front.

More so, it's illegal for teams to put even tyres from different sets on, even if they're the same compound – if they have two sets of softs, one worn and one not, it's illegal for them to put the worn softs on the front and the unworn on the back.

They are allowed to replace one tire in case of a puncture I think.

Pretty sure they're not – if one tyre punctures, you've got to put a complete new set on.

Intreguingly, I can't find the rule that bans this – I can't even find a rule that bans mixing prime and option on the same car. If someone can find it I'd be interested.

It wouldn't be in the tech regulations, it would be in the sporting regulations somewhere. Or it would be in a separate text created jointly by the teams, Pirelli and the FIA.

Re: Tyre Question

The only thing I found was this:

b) A set of tyres will be deemed to comprise two front and two rear tyres all of which must be of the same specification.

f) Unless he has used intermediate or wet-weather tyres during the race, each driver must use at least
one set of each specification of dry-weather tyres during the race

So, unless I'm missing something at the regulations. You still have to use 4 options at the same time, 4 primes at the same time. But then you could use a mixed combination. Rules say that you change tyres, not set of tyres.

I ´m pretty sure teams get their allocation of prime and option tyres and match these to sets to be put on the car.The teams undoubtedlya will check for springrates and shore +hysteresis .As far as I know there was a considerable spread in springrates and shorehardness with pirelli tyres from batch to batch( based on manufacturing dates maybe? )

I think the rules don't actually forbid this (if you looked in GP2 they can still change front only/rear only). But the thing is, if you're going to change fronts only, or rears only, you're probably already 3.3 or so seconds stationary. You might only lose a tenth by switching all 4, and the time gain from all 4 sets of tyres being new should be a lot greater.

I think there is no time in the change itself. But surely you could work around some car characteristic using differently treated /used tyres front rear or even left right.
I´m sure teams make use of this ..if it´s permitted.

The thing is, the rules don't state that you must put a set on as one. If they don't say that then I don't see where they ban putting hards and softs on in combination. If they do say that, then this bans putting half of one set of softs, and half of another on.

marcush, the set is given as such. you can't interchange wheels from a set to another(even if both are from softs). You may asked for a tire change if you think something is wrong.

So I'd bet that they measure the same, and have more or less the same characteristics, because they can't be mixed.

I'd really like you to tell me which rule states this.
