How are the mercedes gills legal?

I'm pretty sure that that pichure is from testing, where the cars do not have to comply with the regulations.

The aperture from the exhaust isnt closed, therefore it is officially classified as an exhaust exit aperture, which is legal.

Had the aperture been closed, those gills would be illegal, but as they are linked to the exhaust there is no problem.

this is a larger version from monaco.. if you zoom you can see here that it's the same as one of the previous photos with the groove type line linking the exhaust.

It must be classed as one exit from wherever it leaves the car itself? whether that be on the bodywork, inside or out...

I would hardly call a groove linking the two.. one exit.. but it's a clever way of doing it

I don't understand what people are talking about here... The exhaust isn't exiting through the gills, they're cooling, not exhaust gas exits.

They are using the one exhaust exit rule to enable them to have gills cut into the bodywork for cooling.

I would bet very heavily that those gills are further than 80cm in front of the rear wheel centre line, and hence not in the bounding boxes described by rule 3.8, simple.
