The safety car saved him for sure but I think Vettel would have managed to keep Alonso and Button at bay, as long as he kept driving defensively.

The end of this race has to be the most bizarre I have seen in a long time.
It was a victory but hardly a great one. Three safety cars over the weekend, all three benefitting Vettel and harming his closest competitors. That was probably the most gift wrapped victory he's had this year.
Hopefully that'll be the last of the easy ones for him with Canada likely to suit the McLarens, and at least let them overtake even if they can't out qualify them.
Then from Silverstone the whole order could be shaken up again if the FIA get their way over the blown diffusers.
