While that may be so, I think the even more damning thing in this case is why he didn't say no to inters. Regarding softs for Button, it wouldn't surprise me if they had it there just to cover all bases. On paper on Friday it would seem that going on softs, considering the difference in pace, would be idiotic. But certainly track conditions on Sunday allowed the softs to at least match the supersofts

What was strange though is that they knew he was just as quick on the softs. Remember qualify 1?
He was going as fast as button was on the options.
It was very strange that they put him on the option to gain an 18 second gap in low traction conditions.
You just don't ask a driver to hammer out 8s in the wet. Mclaren must think the guy is a driving god.
Playing it safe and doing what everyone else is doing is always the way to go.

Whitmarsh needs a 3 month break. He's not forceful enough as a team manager.

The one question he should have been asking is why was his team splittling the strategies. They are running 1 and 2, they are fighting the RBRs, and then they go ahead and split the stratgies.... to cover Alonso?

His job is not to call the strategies but it's his job to question them. Instead of finishing a 1-2, they have finished 1-4 and have lost valuable WCC points to RBR and instead of Hamilton closing the gap on Vettel, we have Vettel extending the lead.

Are you blaming Whitmarsh for Hamilton's spin? Did Whitmarsh's driving earn the drive-through penalty. Come on!

Have you forgotten the massive number of mechanical failures that happened on Kimi's car? He very easily could have been WDC twice before going to Ferrari. By the crazy logic flying around here then Ron Dennis, the founder and multimillionaire that brought McLaren to where it is today should have been given the boot years ago. And hard. Just nuts.

Yep, at least Ron knew how to win champiopships. MW plays nice with other teams and his two drivers, but his style of racing doesn't bring championships. Like I said before, McLaren doesn't have a dominant car, so they don't have much chance of winning the WCC and they are squandering their chance of winning the WDC by playing games with their lead driver. Look at how close Alonso was last year in a slower car.

You forget your history. Go back and check the mechanical failure record of McLaren during Kimi's tenure.

FFS they are running second in the WCC with 4 wins to RBs 6 and Ferraris 1. Looks like he's doing a very good job. Of course threads like this are based on the childish premis that if a team doesn't win everything it must be useless. On that basis Ferrari should sack the entire team and start from scratch. Actually, RB are going backwards in race pace, sack Horner, sack Newey!

Yes, I am. His spin was a direct result of him being put on the SS when there was no need to. When you ask a driver to do 10+ qualifying laps in tricky conditions to get a 19 second gap just to cover up the bogus strategy then you are bound to increase the risks of something happening. Hamilton had the race perfectly covered up to then. Had they put him on the same tires as button, McLaren would have finished with a 1-2, with either Button or Hamilton winning. In either case the lead McLaren driver would have closed the gap to Vettel. But instead all they got was a 1-4 with Vettel extending the lead and McLaren losing valued WCC points.
