Detection point is after pit exit; before Eau Rouge. Technically Webber would have had DRS use after his pass.

I've passed people on the exit of Turn 6 in Sepang before; but I must admit I wouldn't have had the ands to go side by side like that in Eau Rouge.

Does anyone remember that we had a similar situation in 2007 with Lewis-Alonso?

Secondly, Alonso came out of the pits right? Therefore I'm not sure if Webber would have had DRS available (Can't remember where the detection point is)

Lastly, he would have had to back off quite a lot in order to get the best advantage from the slipstream, a maneuver that might lead to an unsuccessful passing move.

You're right though, in iRacing I wouldn't have done it either....either a crash or at least points for an incident would have been the result :p
This might sound contradicting to what i said but in iRacing i would probably have done the same as Webber.
But that´s only because it´s easy to be after-smart and say well to loose the least amount of time to everyone on the grid it´s best to run 1 line through Eau Rouge but when you are racing you don´t really think about that sort of stuff.

So i would say me and Webber would probably agree on the fastest way through Eau Rouge but i would also agree that i would probably do the same thing as he did.
the speeds are just insane from La source and when he saw Alonso coming out i think the only thing in his head was "get past Alonso NOW!"
I retract my statement of it being a stupid move. In essence it was a bad move but in racing terms it was just one goal for Webber and that was to get past Alonso.
Alonso probably gave up long before the corner due to cold tires and probably thinking about the numbers on the championship :)

I'm struggling as to why people think a move that resulted in a clean pass on his nearest rival was "stupid".

But but but but but... It wasn't done on a straight, using only DRS, it must have been dangerous!

Yeah. Lewis lifted that time :-)

I think if you pass into Eau Rouge like that; it's more a game of confidence rather than technique. The guy with less balls will have to back off; or risk a double backflip trapeze act. I think in terms of grip; it is potentially possible to go side by side and still be flat out through Eau Rouge, but it requires coordination between both parties.

I think usually it´s the guy on the inside that have to budge.
the guy on the outside has a parachute if he gets in to hot.
the guy on the right does not. He has to account for what the left lane driver are doing.

7 whole posts before Lewis got mentioned. Didn't have anything to do with the thread. Must be a new record.

Great pass on Alonso and it was similar to the German GP when the leaders were dicing with cars coming out of the pits.
