They could reduce the amount of wing teams run and increase the width of the tyres. Would this help overtaking? Most probably. Would it make the cars look more sexy? Most definitely.

Ah, a 1987 or 88 Ferrari turbo burning off some fuel I guess? What a lovely sight, which only reminds me of all the damage
MrM did when he tried to impersonate an engineer, worst of all was of course the narrow track and grooved tyres.

Ferrari has made so many sexy F1 cars. By no mean were they all fast, but they've even managed to get a looker out of the 09-current rules package. The season ending F10 was a truly good looking car, even put up against previous rulesm packages. But this, this is a truly effing beatiful car.

Aaaah nice picture.
I agree the width of the cars should be increased it makes the look more apealing and it can also influence overtaking in a positive way.
The drag of the cars will be increased and therefore the effect of slipstream. Something FIA now tries to create artificially with their DRS.

Was the narrower track not brought in to control speeds? Unless I'm mistaken, that would likely be why the cars haven't been returned to that width already, and in turn why I doubt they will any time soon, sadly.

If it was introduced to reduce speed then only cornering speeds because you have a slightly higher amount of load transfer. The groved tires where introduced to reduce grip and by this cornering speed. The reason for the reduced width was as far as I remember to make overtaking more easier because 2 cars driving side by side will demand 0,4m less space.
Well this is true but a very primitive logic.
Overtaking must be based on a drag advantage therefore you need cars which have high drag in general and a lot of slipstream. Took the FIA many years to realize that and they have still not found a natural way to solve it.

Ah, thanks. So, in theory, reverting to 1990-style regs would solve that problem?

That is what you get when you have a wannabee to do en engineer's job, just one xample of how MrM screwed up when
thinking he understood things, the narrow track was a disgrace and as mep said, a primive logic.

I was at a Southern California "Cars and Coffee" event on Saturday morning. The local Infinity dealer brought their 2009 Red Bull F1 car, and of course people were crowded all round it. I heard many comments and snippets of conversation as I went round it myself.

People standing at the front and sides were clearly unfamiliar with F1 cars. Their comments were not stupid, just unfamiliar.

People standing at the rear were serious F1 fans who made lots of technical comments. They frequenty got on their knees to look under the diffucer or up the sidepods.

Modern F1 cars are all about the ass.

Agree. I like how the engine cover curves down to the sidepods instead of tailing off in the current FIA-required engine-cover triangle shape that gives more space for sponsors.

When I read the thread title I actually had a feeling it would be about that picture. I saw it a few days ago and I immediately put it as my wallpaper. What a beauty...

Heres the 1680x1120 one if someone wants it: Ferrari F1/87-88C
