Mercedes has everything to gain if Schumacher is successful with the team. In fact, they're probably desperate for such success.
Sadly, Mercedes AMG Petronas is just a really bad F1 team right now.
EDIT: Maybe they're just trying too hard. That can easily be as problematic as not trying hard enough.
Corporate culture does not give a hoot to sentiment. Mercedes Benz does not give a hoot about Schumacher or his reputation. His history is an asset they can bolster or destroy as they wish. For Mercedes, the prize is to be seen as a winning Mercedes thanks to Mercedes, and not thaks to Michael Schumacher. Destroying his reputation and building Rosberg's IS in their marketing interest
I suppose I can see why someone might think that, but it's awfully misguided.
It's in Mercedes' best interest that Schumacher succeed with the team. In fact, it's paramount. Otherwise people might get the notion that the team is so inept, the company is so bad, that even the great Schumacher himself cannot will them to victory.
Corporate culture may not give a hoot to sentiment, but people sure do (see: this thread), and companies try to use that sentimentality to their advantage eight days a week. I can assure you that no company wants to be branded by the people as the one that tore down an icon.
