He may have had his rear wheel on the track.
Anyhow he didn't gain much there, with quite a number of drivers doing the exact same thing.
There's enough unknowns and guesswork as it is, let's not add to the list things the Fia defines in readily available documentation. So from the sporting regs:

20.2 Drivers must use the track at all times. For the avoidance of doubt the white lines defining the track edges are considered to be part of the track but the kerbs are not.
A driver will be judged to have left the track if no part of the car remains in contact with the track.
Should a car leave the track the driver may rejoin, however, this may only be done when it is safe to do so and without gaining any advantage.
A driver may not deliberately leave the track without justifiable reason.

If pulled up on it by the stewards I dare say less grip than expected on a damp track would fall within the bounds of a justifiable reason. But typically this isn't something the Fia seem to concern themselves with in qualy, or even the race, unless another competitor is involved.
This is weird explanation but let's roll with it. Unexpected? The whole track was wet and he did drive this corner many times, it wasn't a first run. Was it as unexpected as the other driver in front and change of grip under breaking for Hulkenberg in Brazil 2012? How about avoiding high speed collision while being pushed off by the other driver as a justifiable reason? Oh, I see you have this covered by including other competitor, how convenient  . [friendly wink not patronizing]

Never mind about this one, there's a loophole apparently, although I can't see all four wheels, it must be it. Fine, using simple test - if it was a driver I support I wouldn't complain. There will (there already were) plenty of examples of gigantic hypocrisy on the part of audience, (pseudo)journalists and FIA when it comes to penalties.

I hope race's going to be good, one of the few remaining warm days wasted on this garbage :x . GP2 was dry but I want rain and chaos. I hope one of the top, protected drivers does Hulk/Ham Brazil and we'll have an occasion to test FIA's consistency  .

As a Lewis fan I think drivers should be pulled up for leaving the track like this, but it would be wrong to single out Lewis on this occasion for this transgression. There are countless other examples, not least exiting Ascari in Monza or the penultimate and final corners in Abu Dhabi, where the FIA choose to turn a blind eye. Do so to overtake someone and they'll punish you, do so to gain advantage in qualifying and unless drivers have been previously warned they seem to turn a blind eye.

That should be changed but not retroactively and not to punish one driver.

If the rain that's over germany now makes it to Spa, we might have a wet race.

For those who don't know where Spa is, it's somewhat between the 3 borders points of Belgium-Germany-Luxemburg and Belgium-Germany-Netherlands.

Here is a more detailed radar. Looks dry at the moment, but look what heading in from the east...

Also note that the wind direction seems to have changed compared to the previous days

Generally I just assume it will rain at some point during the race and you can't go too wrong. I really hope we get a fully wet race or at least a good portion of it being run in the wet, it's always much more interesting.

But would the guy that qualified with slicks have to race specifically with that set of tires or does he have a free choice like the ones that would have qualified with inters?

If weather conditions change for the race you need not use the inters...exactly the opposite would apply if qualifying in the dry and the actual race starts in the wet.
Generally I don't care about what people say. I have to be clear with myself. When everything goes well, people celebrate you, when you make mistakes people criticize you.

I think what he means is if the race is dry, Hamilton would get to choose which dry tire to run on, but if someone set their time from qualifying on dry tires at the same time, do they then start on those tires? Or do they get to choose?
