Can the ERS Capacity INCREASED

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Can the ERS Capacity INCREASED

Post

Hello forum member
Anybodies thoughts on this
In recent discussion and analysis by some renowned F1 pundits , it is said that because of 100kg fuel limit and flow limit , race pace will be , significantly slower pace qualifying face .
To correct or to say make f1 fast as they were ,Can the ERS capacity be increased to get Race Pace, ie more than 4MJ/lap from MGUK to drive train, and recovery energy more than 2MJ/lap, if that is possible ,then how much is possible.
Does the present ERS systems say for any team, do they have capacity to extract more energy than 4 MJ and can MGU-K use up more power to drive the car.
my question is if these systems have capacity of more than 4mj ,can this done with the fuel limit in place ie 100kg.
Please any thoughts on this .

The limit is 4MJ from the ES to the MGU-K, regardless of whether it is race or qualifying.

However, the recovery allowed is only 2MJ.

In qualifying the ES can be fully charged, and that can be used for the fast lap.
In the race at the start the ES can be fully charged, but after the first lap it is practically capped at 2MJ per lap due to the recovery rules (ignoring the influence of the MGU-H). A driver will be able to use 4MJ from the ES over laps during the race, but he will need to forego using the ES to power the MGU-K for a lap or more to build up the storage.

I think now with the compound PU it is out of driver's control and totally under control electronics decision.

Flat out quali laps could see more than 4MJ usage with the MGU-H assisting full ES?

Sure, why not? That said, too much recovery from the H might mean too much back-pressure on the exhaust, which would lead to a loss of horses from the ICE, so I guess they must balance this.

Others have stated you can go over 4MJ already if you count the H-to-K pathway. I don't think the systems as they are now really go full speed, they will be improved over the year and maybe the delta between full-bore qualifying and race gets smaller. Power restrictions on the K could be relaxed in order to improve performance, minimum weight can be increased to allow for more powerful ERS or a bigger ES.
At some point though only so much energy can be extracted from 150Kg of gas thru ICE and H-system.
