Mercedes AMG F1 W08 EQ Power +

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

This is a better answer than sensors or microphones. They often appear on the car for scrutineering, so probably to aid speedy removal of whatever they fix in place (edit: or as said below, to make adjustments).

Whatever they are trying it would be foolish to display it for all and sundry. It must be something that cannot be seen with the naked eye.
I agree completely. This is what I was trying to say earlier.
Let’s not forget the big bump in the nose Mercedes showed at this very race two years ago; it was clearly (in retrospect) a nod to how they would change their suspension layout in 2016 but was clearly visible to all teams, few of which took a similar path.

Can anybody explain the use of these things? Sensors, microphone?
They are two hex sockets as mentioned above. The are to tighten the two floor stays that support the diffuser. The team adjust them on the FIA flat floor to meet the flatness and deflection tests. They go into a wheel box that adjusts the length of the floor stays. I havent seen another team do it this way

Thanks for explanation =D>

How are the other teams doing that adjustment?

I think its just tools they use to adjust something. They will pull out when finished.

WTF, literally the same picture was on the previous page with the same question. Answers to that question spill over onto this page.

Not sure the validity of these claims, but seem this is what Merc are testing:

On top is the old shovel fin/cape and below is the newer version that has been used for a few races now.

I haven't seen another mechanism on rivals cars. If they adjust theirs, it will be simply be via adjusting the threaded ends of the floor stays

Interesting to me who knows nothing about F1 car alignment tendencies, that how much visible toe-in there is on the front wheels on this top view from their team celebration:

Similarly it looks like a small amount of toe-out on the rear! I never would have imagined that, would have went the opposite myself (out at the front, in for the rear).
