Renault Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Renault boss Cyril Abiteboul has had enough of all the talk of how poor their engines have been though, saying that some of it is Red Bull’s fault.

“We switched at Monaco to an improved MGU-K,” Abiteboul said.

“But Red Bull is not using it because it affects the way the power unit is packaged on their car.

“The new MGU-K manages and contains the temperatures more effectively.

“There were no problems with our cars, but we cannot force Red Bull to go with it. It’s their decision.”

hmm lets place it in context:

...no new ICE for RIC at Silverstone; Renault refused after RIC ICE broke down; well the old spare broke down during the race...
...no new MGU-K for testing for RBR and MCL at Silverstone....and at Hungary...; Renault refuses to make it available

...Abi's Hungary response: They should have taken the new MGU-K.

...how convenient to forget his own refusal to make the MGU-K available for testing..... #-o
not strange for RBR and MCL if they want to see if the new MGU-K is as good or better in reliability as the ICE...

The new MGU-K specs were available for all teams from Monaco, so they could make changes to take it well in advance if they wanted it.
And they've been available since Austria (?) I think.
They know what the sizes and accomodation is they need to make it work, both Mclaren and Red Bull declined to make the changes to fit it initially.
I believe Mclaren have been running it on both cars since then though. They've had no issues with it.

Regardless if they use OLD MGU-K or new MGU-K. RBR has had MANY breakdowns. Far more than McLaren and McLaren has put more milage on thier PU/MGU-Ks simply because they haven't had the breaks downs. So you have to suspect there is a packaging issue there.

Someone old enough remembers mercedes' woes in 2005 while some Adrian guy made aero priority over cooling. :)

Is it a coincidence that on two similar tracks, Monaco and Hungary, Red Bull have had 2 MGU-K failures?
they will toast it in Singapore if they stick with old one

No manufacturer can refuse to provide new components to their customer teams, they´re forced to provide same components they´re using, so you post looks like a tantrum to me

Red Bull has the smallest side pods it is no surprise their car is unreliable.

They could be running the PU in a different temperature range. They use different fuel. It might not all be packaging.

well, last year Max had many more breakdowns in the beginning of the season as opposed to Daniel at the end of the season. They have the same side pods, engine lay out, cooling, etc. etc. etc. so luck or lack thereof also plays a role when it comes to a PU breaking down.

McLaren also has had it fair share of (PU) failures (as has Renault) it is all within the range of possible differences, no need to put extra blame on RBR imho.

I agree, but you could put both those things under the guise of "Packaging"/how they're using the PU. In other words, those all fall under RBR's responsibility.

Last year was a different story, both Renault,STR and RBR had PU issues...McLaren used Honda PUs so we're not even looking at them for last year. This year RBR are having a far greater number of PU issues than the other 2 using Renault PUs. So yes you must consider that they're doing something that's causing the issue.

I haven't said anything about McLaren last year. McLaren this year have a Renault engine and McLaren this year (it already started in pre season overheating) have had their fare share of issues.

Do you have number of how many times Renault Mcl and RBR have had (PU) technical issues?

Renault had a TC issue on Hulk's car (known weakness, the TC was fixed the next race) and a K issue on Sainz's (old K). McLaren had 0 PU issues so far. Only GB.
