What is an Oil Bomb?

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

What is an Oil Bomb?

Post

I have come across a Renault pit to car radio transcript from Brazil 2006 and come across this:
AP: Barrichello has just pitted, you need to push mate, come on!

RN: Oil bomb please mate.

ALO: OK.
However Fisi's engineer tells him:
FIS: Blue flags.

AP: We're on it mate.

RN: Yellow flag is clear. Raikkonen is keeping Michael behind him nicely now.

AP: Oil transfer please and mixture 6 please Giancarlo. And revs 5 please, revs 5.
Are these the same thing (I'm assuming they are) but what exactly is it? I wouldn't think the drivers would be expected to control oil flow?

I don't know why I think we already had this thread (that, or I have a fake deja vu).

I also believe we concluded that the problem here (if there is one) is that, at least in spanish, the word for "pump" is "bomba" and it's simply a bad translation. I know I've made the same mistake when I did not speak english as extraordinarily well as I do know... :)

I'm not sure about that theory, because I'm not sure which is the french word for pump. If, in french, you say "bombe de huile" for "oil pump", that explains all: the mis-translation and Alonso understanding it.

Oh, and yes, there is a kind of dry-sump, racing oil-system (the one I know is called Accu-sump) that keeps a reserve of oil under pressure, to be used when you load the engine more, in case you think you're going to have oil starvation, to protect the engine. I imagine they use some version of it.

All dry sump systems I know have several tanks that are used "in cascade". All the systems work by keeping the engine as dry as possible, which means you have to regulate somehow the total amount of oil in the system. At higher rpms there is a little extra oil in the system, just in case. I think there is a nice explanation about dry sumps in the technical section of this forum, courtesy of Mr. De Groote (aka Tomba).

Anyway, if some latino asks where the "gasoline bomb" is, don't call National Security: just tell him where he can find the "gas pump". :)

Pump is translated as "pompe" in french. The sound is nearly the same, so maybe there were a mistake in the transcription.
It is true, there is a pump tank to make the oil level exactly the same.

That's right. I haven't used them since the touring car days but I think the reserve is held around three bar if I remember correctly.

We run a variety of race cars, all from different years. All of which have only one oil tank.

I thought an oil bomb was something you throw out of the rear of the car to sin your rivals off the track.. ;)
