Red Bull RB16

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

the nose looks quite slim...
You need to make it slim in order to have a decent size of cape - the width of the cape has to be inside the bodywork "box" created by the rules.
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

I find it very interesting that the teams are exploring their competitor's sidepod shape and applying it onto their car instead of pursuing their own philosophy year after year. The SF1000's one is highly inspired from the RB15 from last year while this RB16 take some inspiration from the W09/W10.

I mean, it’s all cyclical - the whole concept around the front of the sidepods is ‘copied’ from the SF70H - so everyone is taking inspiration from each other and starting to converge.

I find the sidepod shape interesting - much rounder at the front and actually less jelly mold, necessitating that dramatic downslope which the Ferrari doesn’t have. As already mentioned, it’s also using much more height in the engine cover vs the Ferrari which is completely away from the shark fin area.

I too wonder if this is more to do with the dimensions of the PU with Honda/RB deciding that they need power parity above all else and can sacrifice a bit of the packaging to compensate.

Quite a difference on the rear suspension. The green line is the aproximate position of the lower wishbone in rb15. It was underneath the pullrod.

Moving the lower wishbone forward changes the toe curve more aggressively. Maybe they want more rear steering effect?

I think this shape of sidepod has been a RedBull design cue for sometime. It's similar in concept to the RB06 and its sloping sidepods. It seems to be a "Newey thing".

The nose is indeed much narrower, they are moving towards Merc's philosophy with the cape as well.
