The whole penalty thing is a joke. The only engine that can benefit from these rules is the Mercedes which is almost invinsible. Sometimes I wonder if the old Ferrari International Assistance of Max Mosley or the new Mercedes International Assistance is better.
Whilst the rule might be a little bit mad, we should also praise Mercedes reliability across the last 7 years.
The issue I had with the regs was the stupid token system and lack of testing that locked in the Merc dominance for the first year or two. Added to that of course was the madness of PU customers not having the same knowledge of the complex modes.
Things are converging now and being a Mercedes customer is not a bad place to be at all, it just means you’ve got to do a simply outstanding job if you think you’re gonna go toe to toe with the works team, who have been incredible really.
I think it will do us good to have a year of Mercedes in prep for the new regulations but not expecting a big gain given the scrutiny of our rear of the car being developed.
