Alpine A521

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

In my opinion, no not at Bahrain. It's not one of these tracks where you have long sweeping turns that you accelerating out of from a fairly low speed. Bahrain is more slam on the brake, release the brake and turn while getting back on the gas, straighten the car while getting the car up to enough DF speed and floor it.

There was an analysis on the autosport site that showed that Alpine was generating more Gs in launch than most(top 3 drivers). While McLaren seem to be engauging their deployment at higher speeds and kept it on later into the staight. So maybe their deployment plan was part of the issue.

What I don't understand is that the bulk they added to engine cover doesn't really seem to have been removed from the sidepods? Maybe I just haven't seen good enough pictures yet to show some comparisons.

Agreed. Im not an aero junkie, but the car's profile is shallower at the rear, and combined with the new floor which might pull air around to energise the diffuser it might be the idea. But lets consider that the bodywork they currently have is conservative and there might be tighter packaging to arrive. 1st race of the season i think the team played it safe, and found a few issues, they've had a lot of time to implement fixes and we'll see what the package looks like in Imola..

Edit: i suspect the 'width is mainly due to the split in the air intake, which is simply carbon tubing.. so no real weight penalty.. just a wider airbox..

I wonder if the roll hoop was homogenized, therefore, this was the only option to make a change.

I can see where in the 2020 version of this has little space behind the lower hoop air intake rad and the upper hoop tube. I can see that could cause air flow problems on the lower hoop intake. The lower hoop exhaust would also heat the upper hoop tube. The 2021 solution gives us better flow on the lower air intake and a cooler upper intake without changing any of the 2 entries. Maybe, that is all they were trying to do?

Good! Why didn't they do this earlier? It seems intuitive that the Y250 vortex will be better controlled if the wing tips are closer together...

I.e., generate them together, instead of generating them separately and hoping they will link up by themselves downstream (with the sensitivities that entails).

And here was this article last year https://www.gpblog.com/en/news/61101/br ... tely-.html

"There is already a team that has reported a cooling problem with their car to us. They can't drive it like that for the next two years.

I beleive that was Renault.... both cars overheated in 2020 Hungry?
So they would have needed tokens to change the Roll hoop air intake. They then decided to make the suspension change with the tokens and went with the new air intake change that didn't need tokens?

That's my Guess anyways.

Wouldn't have been simpler to run the top duct to the radiators and lower duct to the turbocharger? Rather than all the crisscrossing of ducts?
