That’s another silver lining... For the team to be taking their time to bring their updates, it might be a comprehensive package where the parts need to work together and they can’t bring them individually.

We just need patience :)

On Sky Germany TV Seidl today said they had some updates on the car and were running them Saturday and Sunday, but he didn't specify what kind of upgrades they were.
Not aero updates that we have been able to detect... Maybe a few under the skin... It seems there was an small change to the floor adding one more vortex generator (from 3 to 4) in front of the rear tires.

I think if McLaren would’ve been allowed to adapt the rear suspension to a Mercedes style like Ferrari and redbull, then they may have been able to challenge for wins on occasion

The rear suspension is fine. Their unique layout (with the wishbones joining later into the chassis) already provides the aero benefits that RB and Ferrari were looking for with their changes.

The problem is in the front (although we can't be sure that it is suspension related). Their front-end is weak and the car feels sluggish on low-speed corners. If they had fixed that while maintining the great rear-end the car has, then yes, they could have probably fought for the occasional win.

Makes me wonder how the story would have been written if the Spygate never happened. Would we have kept Hamilton, Mercedes as a factory team and the whole technical team and perhaps write history as the most successful team in F1 capturing 7 championships in a row breaking every record?
Mclaren did not spy! It was individual act by few people looking for easy success and team swaps to earn more $$$

What Mclaren is guilty of is doing noting after finding out and eventually using the data at one race after the ALONSO e-mail's before qualifying - the rest is history.

However, Mercedes would have never settled as they were looking to buy a F1 team for a long time, they almost bought Mclaren they had 41% ownership of the team at one point but the full deal never went trough.

Amen...

I’m not convinced the front suspension is the problem with low speed cornering. It’s not as if they are cornering at 40mph, aero is still key

Mercs trick rear suspension is not about adding a mechanical advantage, it’s an aero benefit from clearing the air path in front of top of the diffuser. This will be a benefit at all cornering speeds, especially lower speeds

Hence why it’s where Ferrari & RB chose to develop

You can still say that's semi-decent but at this age, the other teams are consistently within the 2s mark with the stops. They have to keep working on that.
Unluckily, if it is equipment related, it won’t be fixed this season... But, I definitely agree that is one of the key points that the team needs to improve... They already know that though, so it might not be as easy as we think

Seidl claimed before the 2020 season started, they would invest in pit stop equipment, don’t know how that went.
You needed Tokens to modify your pitstop equipment fo the 2021 season and we didn’t had any left after the PU change.

They could have made changes before September 30, either they did and it hasn't helped or they choose not to.

https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/arti ... fdzg2.html

All 10 teams will be required to provide a full description of the pit stop equipment they use to the governing body by July 22. Each team is allowed to modify the submitted description after that date, but before the September deadline, providing they update the FIA.

After September 30, only minor changes can be carried out, such as changes to jacks to cope with different car ride height ranges, but these will require approval from the governing body.

In Portimao quali Norris's weakest Sector was sector 3 . Turns 13 and 14 are both "low speed corners". Most notably turn 13 at around 90 KPH (not far from 40 MPH).

Turn 3 is S1 and turn 5 in S2 are even slower but those look to be more of a bahrain style corner where it is more of a stop and go, little travel time in the corner itself.

I think the track modification of t10 maybe of less benefit to our package... due a longer time required for that rotation in lower speed...

That’s a fair assumption... I don’t think they changed their pitstop equipment since it probably wasn’t ready before September... Considering everything else that they had on their plate (rushing upgrades to homologate them, working on the PU integration, etc) it probably wasn’t “the” priority.

But, even if you could make the diffuser work harder, you still probably would have lack of front end grip... If the problem in low speed corners is created by lack of front grip, revising the rear suspension wouldn’t solve that particular problem.

Mclaren haven't spied at all. Two engineers Nijel Stepney from Ferrari and Mike Coughlan from Mclaren were in kahoots to take the data and leave to Honda to produce a championship winning car in the next few years. Mclaren cooperated with the FIA and the car was checked mechanically and nothing was found on it. The whole Spygate was a poor attempt from Max Mosley and the previous FIA to punish Ron Dennis as both of them were at each other's throats and Mclaren paid the ultimate price. Also let's not forget from 1999 to 2008 which it was the end of Max Mosley's FIA they heavily favored Ferrari hiding their illegalities, ignoring penalties while Mclaren was treated differently. There are countless examples which if I started mentioning them I would need 2 pages.

I think that the story would have been written differently as Mercedes's success is built from the former Mclaren organisation. Perhaps on another universe and another timeline Mclaren did not split with Mercedes and they were the ones to dominate. In any case this is all in the past and Mclaren now is a new team that builds to dominate the near future. I hope it will all start in 2022.

Since we still have a few days before we get into the Spanish GP discussion, I wanted to see if we would like to speculate about Lando Norris’ “Toys”...

I don’t think it has been mentioned yet, but at the end of the GP during the regular radio communication, Lando tells his engineer:

“Toys are really good, but I didn’t do that much... Only D-6” and a few laughs ensue.

New toys? Engine modes? The “D-6” makes me think about Differential Mode 6? Maybe part of the upgrades that Seidl mentioned for Portimao that we can’t actually see? (Not sure if differentials can be changed freely and without penalty)... In any case, if it is a new Differential or settings, apparently they were all race on the same setting.

Just thought it would be interesting to hear everyone else’s opinion on the matter :)

Since every team know Barcelona track to every mm^2, do we know from past experience how does this track suit McLaren? For sure this one will be an exciting one to watch!

S1 should be very good, S2 should be good and S3 should be bad.
