Agreed. What’s needed is closer racing between the best teams and drivers, not random events.

I think the idea was brought in to stir up the pot a bit this year because the FIA/Liberty was scared that Mercedes would be dominant again. Bringing in these sprint race events potentially gives a chance for the front end of the grid to drop the ball / be involved in an incident and thus open up the chance of the dominant team being caught. That the aero changes brought in to help Pirelli have unseated Mercedes anyway has done that for them. It would be ironic if the sprint races helped Mercedes (I don't think it will, however).

I would not be surprised to see these sprint races quietly dropped next year if the new cars are able to race more closely and the season is more open.
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

Alpine will supply Esteban Ocon with a new chassis at Silverstone, following its recent difficulties.

"Esteban had two difficult races in Austria and we are still investigating whether there are technical reasons for this," commented Marcin Budkowski, executive director of the team. "To eliminate any doubt, we have decided to make major changes to his car for Silverstone, including a new chassis. Esteban has performed very well at the start of the season and climbed to the third row on merit in two races. in a row a few weeks ago, so we're all working together to make it bounce back. This weekend is the perfect opportunity to do so. "

What was the point of the new tires if the pressures are going to stay sky high.

The new tires only have a slightly reinforced shoulder. Rear tire only. Last year the front tires let go on several cars here. I think that is why the pressures are up.

They ran 25psi front and 21psi rear in the 2020 British GP and upped that to 27psi front and 22psi rear for the 70th Anniversary race ... so it's compared to the first race last year.

Be very interesting to see how the new tyres affect the teams. A harder shoulder should in theory give a more stable aero platform as it deforms less.

That seems utterly ridiculous, since they cut downforce over the winter, and beefed up the rears part way through this season. At the rate they keep upping pressures they will be at roadcar levels before long.

I wish F1 would kick Pirelli to the curb......

The downforce was cut but it's not they went from 2020 levels of downforce to IndyCar levels. The cornering speeds are still high, and thus lateral acceleration is still high. We saw some of the highest corner speeds in the Austrian GP at turn 9.

Higher starting pressure means higher operating pressures as well. Higher operating pressure reduces the degree to which the tire edges may strain laterally when cornering, the lower the pressure the more flexible the tire edges are. Silverstone has 4 or 5 high downforce corners, and these teams are greedy, though they will never admit pressure gouging their tires, they didn't even admit any potential rule-bending with whole flexible rear wing nonsense when it was obvious.

Pirelli has dug themselves a hole where the tires literally last 70% of the percent of the race. The pace drop-off in the 2nd stint is almost negligible. At some point they must pull that back.

For a comparison of how much tyre loads have changed in the high speed corners, last year Hamilton in Q3 entered Copse at 313kph. And exited at 295.
Roughly speaking the loads vary with the square of the speed.
