Mercedes AMG F1 W03

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

This different set of rules has made them not worth it. Even in 2008 teams would block those gills when they could. Even this is preferable apparently:

Anyone know where to get a transcript of this? I'd like to see what Bob Bell said.

Haug has said that "there are 6 cars very strong ahead of us" and he thinks that "Ferrari is not struggling like this is discribed right now"...
And I wonder... this is a great step forward? I am outraged

" Whiting would not reveal further details of how the Mercedes system works, but said that he viewed it as completely passive. "

Ha, ha, ha, sad day for other competitors

That is good news, though I'm wary of anything Whiting says. It is not official yet, this may yet be an instance where Whiting gives the go-ahead only for the FIA to ban it later. Let's hope that does not happen and that the concept is clean.

Jesus - I cannot beleive its legal!!

Good news is that. Even if teams copy it, thats time other teams have to take out of theirdevelopment, meaning theoretically mercedes still have the advantage all through the season.

All the news now says its the rear wing.

Do we think there are 2 systems?

This on the rear wing, then another passive system for the front?

If it is all one system then that will be hard for teams to copy because the packages will be so tight, piping to the front would be very hard.

Please try to remain calm and remember you're talking about a German speaking in English here. The 2 languages are often confused in translation and under the quick fire questioning of the press even Norby can make a little mistake. I don't think he meant there are literally 6 cars quicker than the Mercedes. Rather, I believe he refers to the challenge that lies ahead in terms of getting results with 6 equally quick cars fighting over points paying positions. I agree with him too, if its as tight as it looked in testing dropping a tenth in quali could drop you 6 rows.

I don't think they need a passive rear F duct personally because the short cord DRS flap will stall the main plane quite well when open anyway. Mclaren have already got their system in manufacture apparently.

I guess its like when McLaren introduced the f-duct though....

Others copied it, but it was never as good, certainly not for months and months becasue Mclaren had a huge head start.

Same with this, Mercedes were testing it last year at Suzuka. They must have the system well refined by now.

I think that to copy this system in such little time will be very difficult for the other teams. I have a question, the hole of the RBR nose is not the same? Charlie Waithing has said that there are "SOME TEAMS" ...

Merc didnt test this system at Suzuka, they tested the passive Front Wing F-duct, this is not that, this system is what Scarbs says on his blog, it feeds air thru 2 holes in the RW endplate down thru the beamwing and into the duct there and to the front of the car to stall the FW to create a balance.
