Mercedes AMG F1 W03

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

When I read Charlie's comments, all I can hear is Bernie's voice saying "wouldn't it be nice if he (MSC) got another win?"

PlanetF1 is a sh!tbox of a site ususally. But, as RB has stated in his interviews, the car is good, it will be up front, but it may take a while through the season before it is capable of winning. Brawn states the team is good and is set-up to succeed in the future.

Probably should put this in the team thread.

haha you beat me to it...

on to the Mercedes f-me-duct...

is it all one system operated by the DRS or do you suppose it could be more than that?

Gills can indirectly make downforce you know.

The F-duct is very interesting..

We know the rear wings can't have any slots. So what then? It is all more complicated that Charlie did not mention the front wing... but still.
3.10.2 Other than the bodywork defined in Article 3.10.9, any bodywork behind a point lying 50mm
forward of the rear wheel centre line which is more than 730mm above the reference plane,
and less than 355mm from the car centre line, must lie in an area when viewed from the side
of the car that is situated between the rear wheel centre line and a point 350mm behind it.
With the exception of minimal parts solely associated with adjustment of the section in
accordance with Article 3.18 :
‐ When viewed from the side of the car, no longitudinal vertical cross section may have
more than two sections in this area, each of which must be closed.
‐ No part of these longitudinal cross sections in contact with the external air stream may
have a local concave radius of curvature smaller than 100mm.

I'm pretty sure the gills weren't the reason why last years car sucked and they won't make or break the W03 either.

This is bad. This is going to screw some what the pat of flow, and look at the position of the gills. Very key zone. Merc is going to loose a few tenths because of this.

Is it me or does the above pic look like the exhaust exit is more inboard than before.

And I don't really see the gills as a bad thing. The US Airforce did experiments in the mid-1960s with slots milled in the wings of experimental aircraft. When air was blown through the slots drag decreased without losing lift. Also, the direction of the gills are in parallel with the exhaust yet the coke bottle section directs the gill exit air towards the exhaust meaning that air will be subject to the energy supplied by the exhaust 'charging' that air towards the rear further.

Forget about the gills, this year is all about tyres and exhausts.

You cant compare that because the body is not fitted on the floor at that picture.

That is without a doubt the shadow of the top plane winglet, that is opened.

This whole area looks like it does not belong there... lets see if they just experiment with something in free practise, or if they use it in qualifying and race. i remember an interview with ross brawn after the first barcelona test where he said how happy they were with the car performing just as they expected without any cooling issues.

i'm sure it does not mean a bad thing at all.

I disagree. Look at the end of the short chord flap. The plate that covers the opening in the end plate is attached to the end of the flap. It's perfectly visible.

You're just plain wrong - look at the shape of the small plate on the end of the DRS flap that when closed will rotate down to cover that hole. It's clear as day that it's not a shadow.
