Mercedes AMG F1 W03

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

I doubt it, there's only so much you can do in that little space, but certainly there is a lot more potential than what we have seen so far given the relative openess of the regulations in that area.

but:

why use just a short cord length with the monkey seat when you could have a BIG wing to produce downforce ,albeit with a small span...?

Another area for out-of-the-box, creative & innovative thinking from Merc, perhaps? A blown, triple-element w/ cascades lemur lounger? Why, Red Bull & Lotus would be up in arms again!
Haha, I'd love it if that happened, absolutely love it (spoken in Kevin Keegan's tone of voice :P).

If you keep span the same but increase cord length, then to have the same profile, planform area must increase.

Certainly you will get more downforce, but the aspect ratio drops and the wing becomes less aerodynamically efficient, which is more important anyways. Perhaps they may consider running a larger one for monaco or hungary but to do so otherwise would suggest its an aerodynamic band-aid to compensate low rear downforce levels.

I read that Mercedes tested something like this at Mugello day 2.
Is it true?

Interesting, but to what end I wonder...

Must say, I'm relishing how they've been testing a bucket load of stuff. It's refreshing after being used to having to put a magnifying glass to my laptop screen in order to spot a difference the past 2 years.

They seem to be really hitting their stride as a team this year. May the best Merc win, I say.

Are there regulations covering the dimensions of the monkey? 8)

It only has to be in the centre 150 mm of the car. and not near in the regulated airbox area; which has some other regulations of its own.

Great pic there. Clearly the intake is for cooling yet there remain two intake tubes. I bet that front wing of theirs has a passive function as well.......

That wheel-nut thread looks much the same as McLaren's, I must admit that I like Ferrai's coarse one a lot better.
