Mercedes AMG F1 W03

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Can't be the dreaded b word (ballast) as the C of G is too high. Maybe they use different surfaces on them to change the profile slightly or even different textures. I'm surprised texturing isn't actually done already to the surface that needs to retain air (pressure).
I think they are access ports for the DRS mechanism.
I thought they were on the sides.

It will just energise air from the top of the diffuser.

It's the 2012 version

Being a racing driver means you are racing with other people. And if you no longer go for a gap that exists, you are no longer a racing driver because we are competing, competing to win...

That is just a guess. I don't know what else it could be. Perhaps there is something adjustable in there that we don't know about? Maybe the swan neck is blowing into the beam wing and up through the supports to the main?

Re: Mercedes AMG F1 W03

guys just quickly..and i know this is absolutely futile since this is only testing....i did a quick Excel comparison between the avarage lap op webber and his long run compared to MS and his....since autosports lapcounts were wrong to say the least. I based this on the laps timed on http://f1tests.co.cc/2012.php?rev=on Now i know the tyres were different and we dont know the fuel loads...but here goes:
Webbers avarage laptime over his 59 Lap stint was 1:28,978s (he started on his lap 29 and stopped on his lap 88)
MS's avarage laptime over his 67 Lap stint was 1:29,865 (he started on his lap 55 and stopped on his lap 122)

all according to the timing site.

By the looks of THIS ALONE the merc seems to be 1,085 sec of the pace of RB...offcourse we dont know the fuel loads...
But lets say webber did indeed have 8 laps less fuel than MS based ONLY ON THEIR DIFFERENCE OF LAPS, we could assume that MS was running with 24kg ( 3kg fuel per lap consumption - BBC) more fuel than Webber. Then, by assuming the deficit of carrying an extra 3kg of fuel around barca from 2011, the BBC commantary team claimed 0,32 sec per 10 kg of fuel at this circuit.

So 24kg of extra fuel should yield about 0,8sec (0,32x24/10) worth of laptime right?
so that leaves about a 0,2/3 sec gap down to whatever.

If we take what autosport saif it might be even less (the gap)

AGAIN, this is based on the assumption that they were both equally sandbagging and that the times they were posting were their ultimate speed....which i guess makes absilutely NO SENSE...since this is testing and we dont know what the hell is going on  #-o

I don't understand why you guys are calling it an "eed" because the exhaust is pointed upwards at about a 10degree angle.... There is a picture several pages back that shows the exhaust layout without any body work and it's very clear that the exhaust is pointed upwards.
