But consider the alternative. If the Ferrari's would have passed they most likely have ended up on the podium and RB would head to the Ferrari capital being behind on points.
There is always a balance between risk and reward. In this case the move was risky and had a relatively low chance of an actual pass but the reward was pretty big.
After all Verstappen has been brought in halfway the season with one single assignment and that is to get RB in front of the Ferrari's in the WCC. That is the only thing they can realistically aim for.
So I think the team fully expects him to take some extra risk when there is a red car around.
