Mercedes AMG F1 W03

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

I think the exhaust is expanding and covering the entire top of the diffuser, sort of like their side exit exhaust did last year. I expect a few more solutions to be tried out at the next test.
My thinking is that they are using the sidepod intake air and directing it there. That is what I was trying to demonstrate. Poorly I guess.

Once again, no, you wouldn't.

Ferrari abandoned the exhaust blown diffuser in 1998 with the periscope exhausts to improve aero-balance between on and off throttle.

Luckily, I found this clip on youtube so you don't have to take my word for it:

You *may* (like the McLaren in 2003) blown along the top of the diffuser (on the pressure surface) to aid entrainment. However you do not want to blow through the underside - that concept is decades old.

Seems like a massive amount of rake on the car:

It is, but they also didn't have the fancy computer control back then that they were using last year either. I don't know what the difference is in DF gained between the two. When were extra holes in the floor banned? (before the DD loophole)

I'll have to watch the youtube vid when I get home.

someone better tells them that it is not needed that much anymore, like Ferrari already learned it
Finishing races is important, but racing is more important.

dren, the FIA banned holes at the end of 2010.

On the other hand, they were able to complete 127 laps without issues so I guess it is not so important at the moment. What will happen though if Australia and Malaysia are way hotter than Barcelona is now?
Here you go... Seems that Ferraris color is not changing its color with heat like Mercs, but its definitely better to burn the color than to have such bubbles in it...

I don't see how that would gain downforce though. You would want to help expand the air coming from under the car. If the mini diffuser isn't connected in some way to the main diffuser, it will not increase downforce on the car due to a venturi. Having gasses directed over the top of the diffuser will help, but then again you don't need a hole like that to do so.

I thought those were bubbles too, but they have them on both sides in the same places. So I'm not sure if they are bubbles or buldges due to packaging.

Looks like rake to me.

If you blow up the photo, you will see the severe overheating of the cf floor.

I think they are bubbles, they look too random to be buldges due to packaging. This is the case unless they are absolutely identical on the other side.

Would it make sense to do that?

I don't get it: what are the two tubes and the end of the bodywork intended for? They should exite radiators heat, right?

So why should they channel this heat also from a different way?

Please guys, could you help me understand??
