In short, why didn't Mercedes find more pace on the SS?
That's been a characteristic of Mercedes' cars for the past 3 years - the softer tyres give them less of an advantage than for other teams. My guess would be that a good chunk of their advantage is in getting heat into the tyres, and then maintaining them at the right temperature well. That's less useful when you're using the softer, easier het-up tyres.
