Austrian Grand Prix extends F1 contract until 2030

Ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix, Formula One has announced that the Red Bull Ring has extended their Formula One contract until 2030 following a new agreement with the promoter Projekt Spielberg GmbH & Co KG.

Today’s race will be the 38th FIA Formula One race held in Austria and the 36th Austrian Grand Prix. The two races that did not bear the name of the Austrian Grand Prix took place in 2020 and 2021 when the Red Bull Ring hosted two races on consecutive weekends. Those two races were run under the name of the Styrian Grand Prix.

The first race in Austria was held in 1964 on a circuit at the Zeltweg Air Base. Due to its nature with trees close to the track, the Zeltweg track quickly disappeared from the F1 calendar. Constructed close by, the Österreichring made its calendar debut 50 years ago in 1970 and hosted the race until 1987. A shortened version of the circuit, named the A1-Ring, was used between 1997 and 2003, and now called the Red Bull Ring, the track has hosted the race since 2014.

The sport confirmed the 4-year renewal of contract of the Austrian Grand Prix earlier this year, and it has been now announced that the Red Bull Ring's 4.3km track will remain on the calendar until 2030 following a new agreement with the promoter Projekt Spielberg GmbH & Co KG

President and CEO of Formula 1 Stefano Domenicali commented: “I am delighted to announce this news with our exceptional partners in Austria. The vision and passion of Dietrich Mateschitz, a man who loved this sport, made this all possible and it is a very special moment and a tribute to him that we can confirm we will be racing at this incredible venue until 2030. The race in Austria is a big favourite for the drivers and all our fans and we are looking forward to many years of excitement and action that are ahead of us.”

Commenting on the announcement, CEO Corporate Projects and Investments of Red Bull GmbH Oliver Mintzlaff added: “This is great news for everyone involved. For the Spielberg location, which will be strengthened in the long term. For Formula 1, because the unique tradition of one of the most spectacular and atmospheric races on the calendar will continue. And last but not least for the fans, teams and drivers who love the Red Bull Ring.“

General Manager of Red Bull Ring Erich Wolf said: “The Red Bull Ring is excited to announce that we will continue our special relationship with Formula 1 until 2030. This long-term deal represents Formula 1’s strong commitment to Austria and Styria. The fact that the Formula 1 keeps the home Grand Prix of Oracle Red Bull Racing is of great importance for the Murtal region and for the employees of the Red Bull Ring. With pride and joy we celebrate the tenth joint year at Spielberg. Our special thanks goes to the fans and all supporters.“
