Leclerc missed opening day in Imola due to illness

Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc missed Thursday's media day ahead of the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix after feeling unwell, but the Monegasque is expected to return to the paddock in time for Friday's two practice sessions.

After races in Australia, Asia, the Middle East and America, Formula 1 finally returns to Europe, with Italy's Imola hosting the F1 field at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari.

Thursday is the media day where drivers are obliged to attend press conferences ahead of the race weekend. It emerged on Thursday that Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc would miss the media day in Imola.

Ferrari has revealed that the Monegasque missed the opening day of the weekend after feeling unwell, but he is expected to be in the car when the first practice session gets underway on Friday.

"Charles is feeling unwell and will not be coming to the track today. He will rest and focus on recovering and we expect him to be in the car tomorrow," a Ferrari spokesperson said.

Speaking of the forthcoming weekend on home turf for the Scuderia, Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur said: "After the first six races across three different continents, we begin the European leg of the season in Imola.

"Since the last Grand Prix, we’ve worked hard in Maranello, preparing every detail of the next Grand Prix with the aim of maximising the potential of our package so as to allow Charles and Lewis to perform at their best on what is a demanding track, where we’ll also be able to count on the support of our home fans".
