MOTOGP: Marc Marquez beats Alex Marquez and Bagnaia to win Mugello Sprint

Despite a mistake at the start, six-time MotoGP champion Marc Marquez beat his younger brother Alex Marquez and his team-mate Francesco Bagnaia to win the 11-lap Mugello MotoGP Sprint. F1technical's senior writer Balazs Szabo reports on the Mugello MotoGP Sprint.

Having secured pole position for the sprint, Marc Marquez suffered issues on the grid which saw him lost place into San Donato. The Spaniard's mistake allowed Francesco Bagnaia to take over the lead from Alex Marquez.

There was drama further back as well, as Brad Binder fell after contact with Fabio Di Giannantonio, leaving Johann Zarconowhere to go as both fell. Having started on harder tyres, Pedro Acosta crashed on his own at Turn 15 before he completed the first lap.

Bagnaia was unable to escape from the Marquez brothers, and Alex was able to take over the lead on Lap 2. The Italian was pushed back further at Turn 4 with Marc Marquez coming by.

The six-time MotoGP champion did not wait for long as he made his move on Lap 4 to lead ahead of his brother. The Marquez brothers initially looked to be able to escape from Bagnaia, but the two-time MotoGP fought back and close in on the leading duo.

Although the Italian spent a few laps in close proximity to Alex Marquez, he was unable to launch at attack and with just 4 laps to go, he started to struggle for pace.

As a result of Bagnaia's struggles in the closing stages of the sprint, Maverick Vinales began to close down the Italian. The gap was just three tenths going into the penultimate lap but in the end, it was to remain the same.

At the front, Marc Marquez converted his 100th GP pole into another sprint victory, with Alex Marquez and Bagnaia completing the podium.

Vinales was unable to overtake Bagnaia and finished fourth to collect six points for KTM. Valentino Rossi's team ended a strong day, with Fabio Di Giannantonio and Franco Morbidelli taking fifth and seventh while Aprilia racer Marco Bezzecchi sendwhiched in between the two VR46 riders.

Raul Fernandez bagged his first Sprint points of the season, ahead of Fermin Aldeguer who edged out one-time MotoGP champion Fabio Quartararo for the final point.
