One small mistake - Kovalainen

By on

The Finnish ING Renault F1 Team driver, Heikki Kovalainen talks about his Friday in Montreal and the consequences of his accident in the second free practice session. The rookie hit the wall in turn 7.

Heikki, what happened in the second session?

"I just made a mistake, that’s all. I was on the softest tyres and the car understeered in turn 7 and I hit the wall. Montreal is just the kind of circuit where the smallest error can be very expensive. I honestly didn’t think that the impact would be so violent; I thought I’d just graze the wall and continue without problems. But it didn’t exactly turn out like that!"

How was the car behaving up till then?

"Pretty well. The balance was good this morning, neutral in fact, even if I suffered from graining most of the time. It’s not very worrying, though, as it’s the same for everybody. And then we had a lot of fuel on board to evaluate the performance in race conditions of the two types of tyres at our disposal."

Is your accident a big handicap for the rest of the weekend?

"It’s always better to finish your technical programme! I’m going to study Giancarlo’s data and that should help me. Also I think I’ve done enough laps to learn the circuit. Now I’ve got a session left to fine-tune my car’s set-up for qualifying."
