Six time world champion Michael Schumacher once again secured a pole position, now having a 0.6 second lead over second placed Takuma Sato. All Michelin runners were in very good form and close to one another, but far from the pace of Schumacher's Ferrari.

The German Ferrari ace is followed by a close packed number of competitors, lead by Takuma Sato. All six runners after him on the grid are only 2 tenths slower than him. It looked like Trulli was heading for a possible pole, after time after time the competitors stood in the row behind him. Raikkonen came closest, with a mere 0.002 second margin.

Kimi's teammate David Coulthard did not drive the decisive qualifying session after his car failed to drive him back to the pitlane after he set a fourth best time in the first qualifying. Fisichella also had problems with his car, and did not set a time in qualifying.
