Pole for Raikkonen

By on

Kimi Raikkonen has got his second consecutive pole of the season, confirming that he would have been in front in first qualifying if he had not made a small mistake. The Finn is joined by Mark Webber on the first row, with Alonso and Ralf Schumacher behind them on the second row.

Juan Pablo montoya started as seventh with his second qualifying and managed a really good lap, passing both Red Bull cars, Massa and M. Schumacher for the grid order this afternoon. The Columbian will be 7th on the grid, followed by M. Schumacher.

Before him though, Barrichello decided not do drive as the team had changed his engine. He may have lots of fuel on board for the race. Jordan driver Monteiro on the other hand did complete his qualifying lap but blew his engine just after the finish line on the main straight. He also will have to start from the rear end of the grid. Both men will be joined by Nick Heidfeld because of his earlier mentioned 20 lap penalty because of 2 engine changes.

With a gap of less than 0.08s between the 4 fastest drivers of first qualifying it was an exciting end where they all had to beat the fastest time of Mark Webber. Both Toyotas lost quite some time (at least considering the huge competition of s1t quali) and will see Ralf in 4th, Jarno Trulli in 5th for the grid.

Kimi Raikkonen easily bettered Webber's time in possibly the best car of the moment. McLaren has proved its pace in Imola and are confirming that they aim to win this time. Third is Fernando Alonso who got back on Raikkonen in the second sector but lost out in the final sector.
