Language issue: what are hip-radiators (Lotus 72)?

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

Yes a real copy I have. Bought for me as a present more than a year ago though, so not current supply chain.

Yes a real copy I have. Bought for me as a present more than a year ago though, so not current supply chain.

Started reading immediately and interupted for various reason :oops: now back to reading it.
Any chance you'd be willing to sell/loan it when you are done? It basically seems impossible to find, there is one up for £75 on ebay!

That '639' was my thought too although he stated '63* series' and not 639. My asking was because the two "63" - 1963 and 639 - 1989 are two very different cars, two different areas, two different designers.

Apologies for slow response, but already promised on loan to a friend after reading it. I didn't realise there's no current supply either.

Unusual that its not gone for another print run as publishers are usually quite quick to fill demand for their own commercial reasons.
Perhaps there's one planned.

Yes, the chassis series started by "639" numbering as we were talking about Barnard the designer of it, then going into 640 as evolution and surely a candidate for one of the most aesthetically beautiful F1 cars of all time :D

Stunning in its simplicity of lines but with the first hydraulic activated gearbox in the form we accept as normal now, plus some very clever suspension mounts along with such a pure design overall.

Absolutely - the 639 was a nice looking thing and the 640 was just superb.

I can remember trying to draw it in my technical drawing classes at school back in the day!

The '639' was the development car ran in 1988 and never raced during 1989. It was a mixture of the turbocharged 'F187/88C' and the then forthcoming '640', it futured the semi-automatic gearbox and the new normally aspirated V-12.

As I understand it there's complete separation of F1 88 type chassis designed ultimately by Gustav Brunner and the 639 gestation into 640. They don't share anything in that the monocoque was specifically designed by Barnard to exclude even the manual gear change mechanical components, and so prevent a competing design (instigated within the factory) of manual change gearbox being fitted.
Type 88 was only V6 turbo, I thought.
Barnard was there as technical director but working on new platform without carry over in my understanding.

F1/86 - Postlethwaite designed. F1/87 - Brunner designed - 6 speed gearbox - 90 degree 1.5-l turbo V6 - tipo 033. F1/87/88C - 1988) - Brunner designed - engine tipo 033a. Barnard to FERRARI in 1987 but his first FERRARI car design was the 1989 640 - 3.5-l V-12.

Actually, no. :D

The one you refer to was called just the 'hybrid' at the time and it featured a F1 87/88c chassis and the new aspirated V12 + semiautomatic gearbox



The 639 was the prototype which then lead to the 640, basically very similar but much more refined (and tested in the wind tunnel, while the 639 almost wasn't at all)

1988 FERRARI 639 prototype of which only two were made. One, s/n 106 (the second of only two factory tipo 639 prototypes and test cars build for FISA's 1989 3.5-litre atmospheric formula). F1 tipo 639 s/n 106 was used to test FERRARI's all new tipo 035 3.5-litre engine (685 bhp @ 13k rpm). Was retained by the factory from 1988 to 1999, and was then sold by FERRARI SPA to the first and only owner in Reggio Emilia, it was supplied with and certified, engine tipo 035/5 number 20 and 7 speed FI shift transaxle tipo 639 number 5.

That reads like a cut/paste - can you please cite these sources if this is the case?
