Mercedes W17

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Couldn’t Ferrari do something similar and have it as a permanent part of their package, since they don’t use a DRS pod to open the rear wing?
This device surely create a huge amount of drag. I do not see this begin useful anywhere except for Monaco.
I could imagine it being good at places with a lot of medium to high speed turns and few straights. It’s likely worthwhile in hungary at least.

I’m also sure that some kind of airflow conditioning device in that location could be net positive at all tracks.

Ferrari also already runs a scaled back version of this in their normal package, occupying a not insignificat amount of area relative to this Mercedes solution, so I don’t think it’s impossible.

It’s beautiful. I hope it doesn’t get banned for 2027.

All I see is CDF & WT time, cost and resources for just one race, I like it, reminds me of Jordan in 86
Not that heavy CFD and dev time since it's the last object on the car. Just quick and dirty downforce!

I don’t think beautiful is the word! I love these kind of funky interpretations when they come along but I think it’s firmly in the x-wing category when it comes to aesthetics!

Can anyone tell if the rear wing flaps still have the hinges for opening? I'm having difficulty seeing that area from the images thus far.

The Red Bull one does, at least.
