Not sure what happened there. I watched Stroll's onboard through the pit stop and pit exit. He seemed to have all kinds of trouble bringing the new hard tires up to temperature. Whether that was the actual issue or if something else was going on, I don't know. I assumed it was the tires because nothing else appeared to have changed from before the stop, and up to that point he had been defending well.
Alonso was clearly the quicker of the two, but Stroll did an excellent job defending. I then switched back to Alonso's onboard. The fresh hard tires were a little tricky at first, but he got them up to temperature fairly quickly, and the car looked well-balanced in his hands. The problem wasn't the handling—it was simply lacking pace.
The biggest weakness was its top speed. Whenever Alonso was shown blue flags, he often didn't even have to lift on the straights. The faster cars would simply drive past him while he stayed flat on the throttle.
