Vodafone McLaren MP4-27 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Okay, and what evidnce do you have that the gap is greater than 2 tenths, or for what size it is?

Valencia is a special case, as it had extreme high temperatures and a track layout that the RedBull loved; Silverstone is a special case as it was clear that McLaren had their setup designed for full wet (evidenced by Hamilton trouncing everyone in Q2), while everyone else went for mid-wet to dry setup...
Also mclaren haven't been on pole for ages now either. I don't have any data as evidence, but I've been watching F1 for 10 years now to know who has the best car and mclaren don't have the best car, it's just a gut feeling. Don't get me wrong I very much want to be proven wrong!

I too have read all the ins and outs and the excuses about the last 2 races but red bull was the fastest team in both.

I'm just a pessimist about our chances and I'm bloody disappointed with the season so far

No they don't – but they're certainly within 2 tenths of the best, and the best is rather unclear... Arguably, the Ferrari, McLaren or RBR are all the "best" car (just at different temperature ranges and track layouts).

Eww. I guess it's just an evolution of their current concept, more downwash over sidepod and less undercut. It's surprisingly fat but looking at the leading edge of the sidepod where the winglets are you can see it's missing some sponsor logo which implies a new part yet to be fitted there.

Cjc as you said you've been watching F1 for 10 years you should know better its pirelli F1 we have seen tires can make you go from mid - field to being the fastest car on the track if you manage to get them to work optimally, that is what is happening with maclaren, they had the fastest car on track now they are in the mid field just because the car is eating up the tires thats why they are going back wards lets hope this upgrade will solve the issues.

I just think the best car is the Red bull again, they have been the quickest on 2 very different circuits with 2 very different temperatures....

Mclaren might be within 2 thenths of Red bull, just within those 2 tenths there is Ferrari, Lotus, Williams and Sauber - sometimes Mercedes...

Is that a fin running along the top of the side pod? I can't tell if it joins up to the engine cover or not, but I think it's in front of it.

YES!
I have said that its not F1 its Formula Pirelli and I hate it, I havvent expressed those opinions in this thread as its a thread about the car.
The current rubber is rubbish tho - to quote Schumacher 'a tyre war would be good for F1 - we would have decent tyres!'

Pretty sure it joins up to engine cover, you can see it's close to airbox and the engine even is wider below it.

It's a jigsaw-like piece that fits onto the engine cover bit.

I find it interesting they've seem to have copied Ferrari somewhat

looking at this I'm quessing they are trying to improve the following, flow to the rear, move weight forward, and increase distance from exhaust outlet to rear tires, but its just quessing on my part

Looks closer to the floor but not sure about where it is in relation to the tyres.
