Mercedes AMG F1 W05

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

I'm not sure that is new, it was there before, to me it doesn't look different

I was refering to the floor and posted the same pic as you did. Am I missing something that obvious? I'm not seeing a difference :-s
Can you better describe what and where to look? or maybe draw something on a pic?

Thanks to @emmepi27

Is the new FW endplate layout due to the new 'holes' in the FW, between elements and endplate? From the internal POV, the endplate has an increased surface, since it needs to eject less air, part of this air being ejected through the new 'holes'; from the external POV, more endplate surface means better directioning of the flow to the outside and rear of the car.

Can this be correct?

No he means the floor as in the bodywork beneath the sidepods.

Surprisingly, they also had the the raised edge before. Sometimes a different angle of the same item can give the impression it's something new.

However, it's still new:

If you follow the raised edge to underneath the sidepods, you see it now makes a U bend. I don't think it was that before.

That's not the floor, I'm glad I'm not blind after all ;-)

@tarbof1: Isn't the ubend you are refering to the place where the floor edge curves up? (http://www.f1technical.net/forum/viewto ... 04#p505604) Many teams have that upcurving part at the edge of the floor at that location. (I don't know the name and don't know the functionality, if someone does, please enlighten me)

If you compare the floor to the RBR or any other car on the grid you'll notice Merc is the only one with that floor edge. I've been asking for years now - why? What's the purpose... And the only response I've ever received was that's cause merc uses a different carbon lay up and there is a honeycomb underneath the raised part...but I am not entirely convinced... Someone ask scarbs or sommers

Yes I believe it is, but it looks moved compared to previous iterations.

I don't think there's a term for the curves at the edge of the floor :P. I believe the function is to create vortices as well as bleeding off some low pressure air to minimize interference from outside, higher pressure air. But I could be wrong.

Perhaps nothing ground breaking new on the floor, but I definitely think they refined it. The car is littered actually with refinements.

I hadn't noticed the the furthest inwards turning vane on the front wing has a slot in it? or is that an illusion?

Can anyone tell me what the round bulges are on the outside of the floor infront of the read wheels? I know they're nothing new and I've seen them on other cars before. There's a blatant channel for guiding air right behind them, so are they an exit hole for some airflow? If so where does it come from?

A quite dated article, but I think this answers what you are asking, or are you refering to something else?
