Even on a track with longest straight, it is impossible to overtake when cars have as much as half a second pace difference. I can't imagine the scene next year with much faster cars. Circuits like Australia, Spain, Hungary would kill the viewers with Greatest boredom ever.
.
And I will say welcome back to the 2000s where the only "overtakes" in Barcelona( for example) were in the pits.

This is ridiculous, really. But I guess FIA has reacted in this way as a response to Vettel´s harsh words.

This is not good for F1.

And yet, he was healthily pulling a gap on Rosberg. Makes one wonder whether Rosberg's engine these last 2 races have been turned down. Like, a lot.
I dont understand what is going on with Nico. One thing is to be cautious but he is going much slower than in the previous races. He is playing with fire because Vestappen put him under a gret pressure. His defense was great but really, cant he go faster?

Ricciardo's interview after the race I agree with what he says, Ric should get promoted to third.

I'm a Hamilton supporter but I wouldn't of been surprised or against for him to get a penalty for the first corner incident. He would only of received a five second penalty which wouldn't make much of a difference because he would of been able to stretch is lead and keep his position.
True, and that penaly would have done Verstappen´s penaly logic. Was that difficult to the stewards to act with some logic?

Ricciardo is probably right but he could attack Sebastian because Vestappen didn give him the position. I dont think this was fair. We are talking about a situation that only happened because Verstappen didnt do what he had to do.

It is races like this, steward desisions like this (unconsistant) and driver behavior like this why F1 is loosing fans...

This was evidenced by his turn in attempt where he seemed to get a bit of oversteer and had to correct, then ran out of room.
When you brake 10 meters late, nobody can outbrake you. The first turn in a race is an overtaking opportunity. Gaining an advantage means not losing out when you should have. I would have accepted a 5 sec penalty but he really should have tried to get back on the track before turn 2.
You've clearly never left the track in a car at high velocity have you? You are aware that it's slippery right and that when you hit such a surface, it's best to go straight and not make any erratic movements which might cause your car to possibly spin?

I also think the fact that there was a VS and then a safety car right after that incident played a role in why it wasn't investigated or punished; meaning that the (gap) advantage he pulled by leaving the track was nullified.
Not for nothing, Rosberg's Championship is the only thing that lends credibility to Hamilton's recent success. Otherwise, he'd just be the guy who's had the best car. — bhall II

I think everyones issue is that he traversed the T1, T2, T3 complex faster than anyone else by bypassing the track and in doing so managed to completely negate the effect of his error in terms of time and track position.

I agree the incident with Vettel and Ricciardo would never of happened had Verstappen done what his team told him to do and give the position to Vettel. Riccardo would of more than likely overtaken both in the end.

This won't teach Verstappen anything other than to do the same again because its rewarded him an extra position from fifth to forth.

For longest time I remember watching F1, the first corner of the first lap incidents have been an exception to the rule, as long as there is no contact. That is the most exciting part of the whole race. We have seen many incidents of overrunning in the first corner. As for overrunning in a corner, I have never seen any penalty when a car ahead breaches the braking zone and cuts a corner, except for a track limits warning. The rules have been applied when there are two cars side by side.

yep, and to see people comparing VES incident with HAM's start shows what a truley warped perception some people have.

All that I will say is that turn one needs some kitty litter. This would have penalised both Lewis and Max enough that they would have lost position instead of gaining or maintaining position.

Yeah, would have been great if VES would have crowded ROS into a gravel pit.
yes, but then he would receive a penalty. this way "nothing happened"

That may be true, but what people are missing is that when he left the track at that speed, he was effectively a by-passenger and had no means to simply stop and return to the track in what these people would deem to be fair or appropriate. If there was a wall, he'd have crashed.

If there had been no safety car phase and Hamilton had stayed at that 2 second gap, I would have expected him to be hit with some form of punishment, because that gap/advantage was unjust. The safety car, however, nullified that advantage and became a subsequent non-issue. If people here are arguing he should have given up a place to someone - who and how many? It's an impossible to hand out a just punishment or determine to what degree that advantage was gained, especially considering that running off track, picking up debris, his brakes being in a critical state due to the lockup etc. But the safety car neutralized that as well.

How long does and should this be argued? He didn't gain a position. He simply kept it and then the race was neutralized.
